Moscow Summons US Ambassador Over Civilian Deaths in Sevastopol Attack

The Ukrainian strike on the peninsula using US-made missiles killed at least four people and injured more than 150.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has summoned the US ambassador to Moscow after Ukraine used American-supplied ATACMS missiles in an attack on the Crimean peninsula, resulting in numerous civilian casualties.

In a statement on Monday, the ministry said Ambassador Lynne Tracy had been presented with a demarche in connection with what it called “a new bloody crime of the Kiev regime patronized and armed by Washington,” referring to the Ukrainian shelling of Sevastopol the day before.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the Ukrainian attack occurred around noon local time on Sunday, involving five ATACMS missiles armed with cluster munitions, which are outlawed in more than 100 countries. Officials said four rockets had been destroyed in mid-air, while a fifth was damaged by air defenses, veered off course, and detonated over Sevastopol. Local authorities say the strike killed four people, including two children, and injured more than 150.

In conversation with Tracy, Russian officials emphasized that the United States was “waging a hybrid war against Russia,” and had become party to the Ukraine conflict by supplying Kiev with modern weapons, including ATACMS missiles with cluster munitions. The ministry also noted that American military specialists were actively engaged in designing the flight mission for ATACMS, which means they “bear the same responsibility for this atrocity as the Kiev regime.”

The ministry added that Tracy had been told that the US was “encouraging the pro-Nazi Ukrainian authorities to continue hostilities until the ‘last Ukrainian’” by approving strikes deep inside Russian territory. These actions by Washington “will not go unpunished,”Moscow warned.

The US Embassy in Moscow has yet to comment. When asked for its take on the deadly Ukrainian strike, the Pentagon replied that “we have seen the reports and have nothing to say.”

Commenting on potential retaliation on Monday, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov recalled what he described as a “very important” statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which he said Moscow could send its long-range weapons to regions where they could be used to attack countries that provide Ukraine with military support.

Dozens have been killed or injured in a series of coordinated attacks in Dagestan, Russia

At least 15 policemen and a priest have been killed by gunmen in the North Caucasus region of Dagestan.

Two churches, a synagogue and a police traffic post were targeted in a series of coordinated attacks on Sunday, at around 6pm local time.

Dagestan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said a group of men armed with automatic weapons opened fire on the places of worship in Derbent and set them ablaze. A 66-year-old Orthodox priest, Father Nikolai, reportedly had his throat slit.

Pictures show a minimum of three gunmen, all dressed in black.

The attackers then fled in a car. Russian authorities have claimed that two of them have been killed.

At the same time as the attack on the churches and synagogue, a police traffic post was attacked in Makhachkhala, about 75 miles north of Derbent, on the coast of the Caspian Sea.

Footage posted on social media shows fighting in the streets of the city, as black-clad attackers engage the police, and civilians fleeing as police chase the attackers across a beach.

15 police officers are said to have been killed. Dozens of civilians are also believed to have been injured. Russian authorities say four of the attackers were killed.

Officials in the region, which has a history of Islamic atrocities, are already blaming the attacks on Ukraine and NATO.

On Telegram, local politician Abdulkhakim Gadzhiyev wrote: “There is no doubt that these terrorist attacks are in one way or another connected with the intelligence services of Ukraine and NATO countries.”

Chechnyan leader Ramzan Kadyrov said, “What happened looks like a vile provocation and an attempt to cause discord between confessions.”

This attack comes a few months after the deadliest terrorist attack in Russia in recent memory, when gunmen stormed the Crocus concert hall in Moscow and killed over 130 people.

That attack has been blamed on a faction of ISIS called ISIS-K, while others, especially in Russia, have suggested NATO and US involvement in coordinating the attack.

Experts in UK To Ask: Is Milk Racist?

UK taxpayers will be funding research into the “colonial legacies” of milk

Oxford academics will be asking important questions about milk and its connection to “colonial legacies” as part of a taxpayer-funded study.

The project, called “Milking It: Colonialism, Heritage and Everyday Engagement with Dairy,” will be based at the History of Science Museum in Oxford, and will be paid for through the Department for Business and Industrial Strategy.

One of the principal researchers has already claimed that milk is a “Northern European obsession” that has been forced on other people across the globe.

Dr Johanna Zetterstrom-Sharp has said that it’s a “white supremacist” assumption that milk should be a key part of the human diet, because most people beyond Europe and North America are generally lactose intolerant in adulthood.

She made similar remarks at a 2022 talk, “Milk and Whiteness,” at a Wellcome Trust exhibition on milk.

In an announcement that it had received funding for the new project, the Oxford History of Science Museum said: “By focusing on communities intersecting industry, aid and government regulation, the project aims to centre on heritage as a vital framework for understanding how colonial legacies influence contemporary issues and affect people’s lives.

“Through milk diaries, archival research and participatory podcasting, it will investigate historical engagement with milk, building networks with consumers and producers in Britain and Kenya.

“The project will question both the imagined and real aspects of milk, revealing the intimate and political nature of this everyday substance.”
