Four More Human Bird Flu Cases Announced
Four poultry workers in Colorado have tested positive for H5N1 bird flu, health officials confirmed on Sunday.
There have now been nine confirmed human cases of bird flu since the current outbreak began in 2022. Eight of those cases were reported this year.
Health officials stated that the four individuals suffered mild symptoms, including irritated eyes and common respiratory symptoms such as fever, coughing, a sore throat and runny nose.
A fifth individual who is suspected of having bird flu is also undergoing testing.
All five are known to have had contact with infected birds.
The four other cases that were reported this year were all among dairy workers, in Michigan, Texas and Colorado.
H5N1 has been confirmed in 152 dairy herds in 12 states, and poultry farmers have reported cases in 30 states.
Last week, Colorado Governor Jared Polis announced a state of emergency, in order to “[unlock] the resources necessary to help affected poultry facilities respond to and contain outbreaks of avian flu.”
The announcement came in response to an outbreak of the virus at a massive Weld County chicken farm. Nearly 2 million chickens are due to be slaughtered there.

Were Secret Service Resources Diverted from Trump Rally to Jill Biden Event?
Secret Service resources and manpower were diverted from Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania to a Jill Biden event in nearby Pittsburgh, according to Susan Crabtree of RealClearPolitics.
Crabtree claims to have spoken to individuals, probably within the Secret Service, who said that Trump was deprived of his regular service detail and had fewer counter-snipers than he would normally have, because of the Biden event.
Crabtree made the claims on Twitter.
“This is the problem that my Secret Sources have cited: Secret Services resources were diverted to Jill Biden’s event and away from Trump’s because they followed agency protocol applying to Trump as a former president, according to two sources within the Secret Service community,” she wrote.
“There were also many supplemental agents from different field officers (not Trump’s regular detail) providing security at the rally because Trump’s regular detail has been overworked (some working 7 days straight), and only two counter-snipers.”
Crabtree went on to note that Trump is “not just a former president”: He is, in fact, the first former president to have run for the office again, and “he has been the focus of several prosecutions and controversies.”
“Understatement intentional,” she added.
She ended her post by asking: “Who made the decision to divert the resources to Jill Biden’s event?”
The First Lady spoke at an event in Pittsburgh that began at the same time, 5 pm, as Trump’s rally. According to CBS, she was due to announced that she would be speaking at an Italian Sons and Daughters dinner.
Crabtree’s claims have yet to be corroborated, but major questions have been raised about the adequacy of Trump’s protection detail on the day of the attempted assassination.
It has now been revealed that a local law enforcement officer climbed on the roof and confronted Thomas Matthew Crooks, before backing off, allowing the gunman to open fire on the former president.
Eyewitnesses have also described repeatedly attempting to warn Secret Service and police officers about the presence of a gunman on the roof in the minutes leading up to the attack.

An FBI spokesman told reporters that “there’s going to be a long investigation” into how Trump was shot.
“We’re still working through the security apparatus that the Secret Service had in place, what potentially happened” the spokesman said at a press conference.
“There’s going to be a long investigation into exactly what took place and how the individual was able to get access to the location, what type of weapon he had—all that is really days, weeks and months of investigation.”

Police Officer Confronted Trump Gunman and then Backed Off
A local police officer confronted Trump’s would-be assassin on the roof and then backed off, allowing the gunman to fire before he was killed by Secret Service agents.
According to the Associated Press, the police officer climbed onto the roof where Thomas Matthew Crooks was laying with his rifle and then retreated when Crooks pointed his gun at him. Crooks then fired on the former president before being killed.
This fresh revelation about law enforcement’s behaviour on Saturday raises further questions about the security measures that were in place and about the capabilities and motivations of the men and women assigned to protect Trump at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Eyewitnesses have described attempting to warn Secret Service and law enforcement about the presence of a gunman multiple times in the minutes before he opened fire.
One man, a local Trump supporter, told BBC News how he and a group of others desperately tried to alert police and Secret Service to the gunman’s location, only to be ignored.

The gunman’s motive and connections remain unclear at present.
Bombmaking equipment was found inside his vehicle and during a search of his home in Bethel, Pennsylvania. The devices have been described by the FBI as “rudimentary.”
The media has been quick to suggest Crooks is right-wing, because he was registered as a Republic voter in his home state, but federal campaign finance reports show he donated money to a progressive PAC on the day of Biden’s inauguration.

Poll: Majority of Americans Believe Political Violence Is Now More Likely
More than two-thirds of Americans now believe further political violence is more likely, after the shocking attempt on former president Donald Trump’s life on Saturday.
A snap poll conducted by YouGov on Sunday morning asked the question, “Do you think the current political climate makes politically motivated violence more or less likely than normal, or the same as normal?”
Just over-two thirds of respondents, or 67%, said they believed politically motivated violence is more likely. Only 8% said they thought it was less likely.
Respondents were also asked, “How big of a problem do you think political violence is in the US today?”
Exactly half said they believed political violence is “a very big problem,” with 32% saying it’s “somewhat of a problem” and only 10% saying it’s either “not very much of a problem” or “not a problem.”
The 4339 adults who took part in the polling were also asked about their confidence in the Secret Service: Can they “protect presidential candidates from harm?” Only 20% were “very confident,” whereas the largest single share of respondents, 45%, were “somewhat confident.” Just under a quarter were either “not very confident” or “not at all confident.”
Donald Trump escaped assassination on Saturday at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, by a distance of millimetres. Turning his head as the would-be assassin fired, a bullet that would have entered the former president’s brain and surely killed him instead grazed his ear. The gunmen fired multiple shots, killing one member of the crowd and seriously wounding at least two others. Serious failures by the former president’s security detail are now being investigated by the FBI.
In a televised address to the nation yesterday, President Biden said, “Violence has never been the answer.”
“We cannot, we must not go down this road in America. We have travelled it before throughout our history.”
The address marked a significant deviation from the President’s rhetoric in recent weeks, most notably his sinister comment that “It’s time to put Trump in the bullseye.”
At the end of last month, the President tweeted, “Donald Trump is a genuine threat to this nation.
“He’s a threat to our freedom. He’s a threat to our democracy. He’s literally a threat to everything America stands for.”

‘We Got This’: Secret Service Delivers Security Briefing Ahead of RNC Event
Secret Service officials delivered a security briefing with a focus on the upcoming Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this week following the attempted assassination of former President Trump in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

Over 50,000 people are expected to gather in downtown Milwaukee for the start of the 2024 Republican National Convention this week, two days after an apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
While Republicans plan to gather to officially name Trump the GOP presidential nominee starting Monday, the focus of the RNC seems to have shifted after the shooting at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday.
Large events like the RNC usually carry heavy security with local, state and federal officers on site, but after Trump was injured in Saturday’s shooting, security is now top of mind for the convention.
Trump said Sunday he will not allow “evil to win” and looks forward to the convention.
“In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win. I truly love our Country, and love you all, and look forward to speaking to our Great Nation this week from Wisconsin,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
The Secret Service briefing comes amid concerns over the agency’s failure to protect Trump from the shooting, especially given the circumstances that led to the shooter to so easily take several shots at Trump from a fairly close proximity.
