X Re-Joins Pro-Censorship Advertisers’ Alliance

For X, despite the strides the platform has made toward protecting users’ speech since the Twitter takeover, the GARM relationship is most likely simply about (ad) money – and one of the several efforts to make the platform profitable at last.

Given how X has gone out of its way to reveal the depth and breadth of online censorship via the Twitter Files, this makes for an awkward reunion: the company has decided to rejoin the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM).

It’s a pro-censorship, World Economic Forum-affiliated advertisers’ group, that achieves its objectives through the “brand safety” route (i.e., the censorship “brand” here would be demonetization). And last summer, it was scrutinized by the US Congress.

X Re-Joins Pro-Censorship Advertisers’ Alliance

GARM is one of those outfits whose roots are very entangled (comes in handy when somebody tries to probe your activities, though) – and the chronology is not insignificant either: formed in 2019 as a World Federation of Advertisers (WFA) initiative, partnered with the Association of National Advertisers (ANA).

Then came another “partnership” – that with WEF (World Economic Forum), specifically, its Shaping the Future of Media, Entertainment, and Sport project – a “flagship” one.

In May 2023, the US House Judiciary Committee wanted to know what exactly was happening here, and whether “brand safety” as a concept, as exercised by these entities, could be linked to censorship of online speech.

So the Committee subpoenaed the World Federation of Advertisers (and GARM), asking for records that might show whether these groups “coordinated efforts to demonetize and censor disfavored speech online.”

Committee Chairman Jim Jordan was at the time concerned that this conduct might have run afoul of US antitrust laws.

For X, despite the strides the platform has made toward protecting users’ speech since the Twitter takeover, the GARM relationship is most likely simply about (ad) money – and one of the several efforts to make the platform profitable at last.

Those who were hoping for a “free speech absolutism” on a platform like this might be disappointed, the Congress might investigate some more; but ultimately, the move represents a “realpolitik-style” compromise.

And so X is “excited” and “proud” to be back as a GARM member. The company’s “Safety” account posted something about “the safety of our global town square” apparently being relevant to this decision, but did not elaborate.

Now listed by GARM along with X are YouTube and Chanel – and, in between, some of the biggest pharma and telecoms out there.

Big Money, one might say.

Russia Accuses US of Expanding Biological Weapons Research in Africa

There are believed to be more than 300 “biological research facilities” run by the Pentagon throughout the world, and Africa is considered to be a hot spot.

Russia is now accusing the United States of expanding its bioweapons research on the African continent.

Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, head of the Russian Armed Forces’ Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Protection Forces, made this claim earlier in the week based on information his troops have garnered. The information alleges that the U.S. is shifting gears after similar programs that America had underway in former Ukrainian territories were stopped by Russia during the conflict there.

Kirillov stated: “Because Russia has managed to halt the implementation of biological warfare programs in Ukraine’s liberated territories, the Pentagon is forced to transfer incomplete research under Ukrainian projects to other regions.”

He claimed that U.S. Department of Defense contractors are working on such programs in a number of African countries, including as South Africa, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

According to Kirillov, the U.S. works with outside parties in an attempt to obscure this activity. They named a number of intermediaries, such as EcoHealth Alliance and Metabiota, that they believe are being used as part of the expanded bioweapon biological warfare programs in Africa.

He also identified several examples to support his claims. For example, he pointed to U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases staff carrying out a large-scale study of hantavirus from bats in Kenya last October.

In a more recent example, he cited a meeting between officials from the Pentagon and the Department of Health and Human Services with disease control officials in Africa to explore the possibility of developing lab capabilities there.

In the past, Kirillov has accused the U.S. of carrying out research on dangerous pathogens and components of bioweapons in Ukraine.

Biological research facilities around the world

There are believed to be more than 300 “biological research facilities” run by the Pentagon throughout the world, and Africa is considered to be a hot spot. In many cases, these facilities are set up under the pretense of improve the area’s health services or fighting local epidemics, but the involvement of agencies like the Pentagon indicates something more is going on.

Russian military intelligence maintains that there are at least four American bio labs in Nigeria alone, and Kirillov has drawn attention in the past to what he termed a “strange coincidence” of epidemic outbreaks in the area surrounding the facilities.

There have also been reports of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Forest Glen Park, Maryland carrying out activities at the facilities belonging to the Nigerian Ministry of Defense. This involves testing dangerous pathogens that could be exposing countless Nigerians to a major biohazard.

Kirillov even went so far as to call on the World Health Organization to look into the activities at labs in the Nigerian cities of Lagos, Zaria and Abuja funded by the U.S. and share its findings with the world.

U.S. accuses Russia of disinformation

The U.S. insists these labs are harmless and has accused Russia of being “engaged in disinformation,” suggesting it could be part of a broader plan to further its efforts in Ukraine.

“The U.S. Government is concerned that this false narrative may be a prelude for a false-flag operation where Russia itself uses biological, chemical, or nuclear weapons in Ukraine, and then attempts to blame it on Ukraine and/or the United States,” the State Department’s Global Engagement Center warned last year.

It added that “Russia continues to maintain an offensive biological weapons program in violation of its obligations under the Biological Weapons Convention.”

Major US Democrat Donors Threatening Party Over Biden

Discontent over the president’s debate performance “appears to be turning into a full-blown party revolt,” the Daily Mail has reported.

A growing number of top Democratic donors are fuming over US President Joe Biden’s performance in his debate with GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump, the Daily Mail reported on Tuesday.

Biden’s performance during Thursday’s face-off with Trump, widely seen as incoherent and fumbling, has also highlighted concerns about the US president’s ability to govern.

Several US media outlets reported that the showdown had left many Democrats and their donors scrambling to find a replacement for Biden as the party’s presumptive presidential nominee.

The British daily claimed that the discontent “appears to be turning into a full-blown party revolt” in the wake of the event, adding that key Democratic donors are threatening to “pull the plug” unless Biden drops out of the race.

Former hedge fund manager Whitney Tilson, who has donated several hundred thousand dollars to the Democratic Party, lashed out at the US president, telling the Daily Mail: “For Biden’s own good and the good of the country, he should step aside immediately.” He added that the incumbent had so far failed to reassure any party donors, which he claimed “confirms my worst fears.”

Meanwhile, several Democrats interviewed by the tabloid vented their frustration at what they called attempts by Biden’s team to “gaslight”them into believing there was nothing to worry about. Tilson echoed this sentiment, saying: “They’re p**sing on our legs and telling us it’s raining… How stupid do they think we are?”

An Axios report also provided insight into the campaign’s push to reassure donors during a Zoom call on Monday. The outlet claimed, citing sources, that while “there wasn’t much panic” during the call, there was a lot of skepticism. “It was a damage-control call,” one source said.

However, the report said Biden’s team had not tried to put a positive spin on the debate debacle, instead echoing the president’s own assessment, in which he acknowledged that “I don’t debate as well as I used to.” At the same time, Biden officials reportedly gave donors data and made arguments designed to prove that the president still has a chance of beating Trump.

A CNN flash poll conducted after the debate found that 67% of the viewers thought Trump had performed better. Meanwhile, according to a CBS News poll, 72% of Americans say Biden does not have the mental and cognitive health capabilities to serve as president.

NY Times: Ban July 4th Fireworks to Fight Climate Change!

NY Times: Ban July 4th Fireworks to Fight Climate Change!

Article argues Americans should give up fireworks because they pollute environment and terrify animals.

The liberal New York Times is urging Americans to give up Fourth of July fireworks celebrations in the name of stopping climate change.

In a recent op-ed, titled, “Enough With the Fireworks Already,” the killjoys at the Times insisted Americans find a different way to celebrate their nation’s independence.

NY Times: Ban July 4th Fireworks to Fight Climate Change!

The article argues Americans should give up fireworks because dogs and wildlife are terrified of loud booms — definitely not because the NYT hates America or anything.

And those were all companion animals, the ones whose terror is clear to us. We have no real way of knowing how many wild animals suffer because the patterns of their lives are disrupted with no warning every year on a night in early July. People shooting bottle rockets in the backyard might not see the sleeping songbirds, startled from their safe roosts, exploding into a darkness they did not evolve to navigate — crashing into buildings or depleting crucial energy reserves. People firing Roman candles into the sky above the ocean may have no idea that the explosions can cause seabirds to abandon their nest or frighten nesting shorebirds to death.

The NYT also says fireworks should be banned because they’re toxic to the environment and could cause fires, before going on to claim Americans are also scared of loud booms because of recent mass shootings.

Animals aren’t the only ones that suffer on the Fourth of July. We live in a country completely saturated with guns, and far too many of them are fired at strangers at public events. These days many human beings have a similar panicked reaction to the sound of fireworks, mistaking it for gunfire.

The article next launches into a climate change rant lecturing Americans that, in addition to giving up fireworks, they need to “eat more vegetables and less animal protein,” and “raise the thermostat in the summer and lower it in the winter.”

“In that context, surely, we can give up fireworks. Of all the little pleasures that give life meaning and joy, surely fireworks don’t come close to the top of the list, and it costs us nothing to give them up,” the NYT writes, claiming that doing so would be “the right thing.”

The op-ed complains about a “conflation of selfishness with patriotism,” before going on to suggest Americans who eat hamburgers, drive big trucks and “fire bottle rockets deep into the night on the Fourth of July” aren’t “good Americans.”

While the Times views July 4th celebrations as an unnecessary novelty that can be dispensed with at a whim, the celebratory explosions are actually deeply engrained in American history with fireworks popped at the very first Independence Day celebration.

According to History.com:

The tradition of setting off fireworks on the 4 of July began in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, during the first organized celebration of Independence Day. Ship’s cannon fired a 13-gun salute in honor of the 13 colonies. The Pennsylvania Evening Post reported: “at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks (which began and concluded with thirteen rockets) on the Commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated.” That same night, the Sons of Liberty set off fireworks over Boston Common.

The American Pyrotechnics Association reports America’s second president, Founding Father and Declaration of Independence signer John Adams, once proclaimed the Fourth of July “ought to be solemnized with pomp, parade, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other.”

Given the historical significance of fireworks in American culture, it appears the Times is attempting to undermine another institutional US tradition with UN propaganda masquerading as an op-ed.

The anti-firework piece comes as an op-ed published by the Times on Tuesday also argued for more government regulation of free speech, claiming “The First Amendment Is Out of Control.”
