‘Long Knives Are Out’: Zelensky, Ukrainian Political Establishment Battle for Supremacy

The controversial Ukrainian leader is attempting to purge his political opponents, but has been met with resistance within the country and from his handlers in Washington.

Security analyst Mark Sleboda joined Sputnik’s Fault Lines program Monday to discuss political intrigue in Ukraine as President Volodymyr Zelensky’s position grows more tenuous by the day.

In recent weeks the embattled Ukrainian leader has made attempts to sideline potential political opponents, most notably the head of Ukraine’s armed forces Valery Zaluzhny. But Zelensky has been met with opposition as the controversial leader struggles to maintain the country’s standing on the battlefield.

“Last week, everyone in the Western media told us that Zelensky tried to fire Zaluzhny but failed,” recalled Sleboda. “And there’s different reasons why he couldn’t get his replacements. [Kyrylo] Budanov and [Oleksandr] Syrsky both turned down [the position], then Zaluzhny declined to resign and said, ‘You’ll have to fire me,’ then the West put pressure on him not to do it.”

“But CNN told us that he would be fired by the end of the week, that that was the word from their source,” he continued. “And coming into the weekend, the Washington Post tells us that, over the weekend, Zelensky let the United States know that he was going to fire Zaluzhny, but they weren’t happy about it.”

President Zelensky then appeared on Ukrainian television and announced he was planning a purge of the entirety of the country’s leadership.

“This seems to be, I would think, anger and frustration over his inability to exercise his presidential authority to get rid of Zaluzhny,” concluded Sleboda, noting that the Ukrainian president has been met with opposition from military and intelligence leaders. “And presumably there is other opposition within the regime. We know that [Vitali] Klitschko, the mayor of Kiev, the former boxer who was one of the public frontmen of the Maidan Putsch, he’s come out and attacked Zelensky on multiple occasions.”

The analyst noted that Zelensky has also been criticized by business leaders as well as Petro Poroshenko, the extremist figure who was the first president of the Russophobic government that took hold in Ukraine after the US-backed Euromaidan coup.

“So, the long knives are out and Zelensky wants, evidently, a clean sweep. He’s just, ‘I’m going to get rid of everyone. You’re all against me,’” the analyst insisted.

But Sleboda noted that Zelensky has been widely ridiculed within the Ukrainian government, recalling Ukrainian officials’ characterization of him in Time magazine as delusional and “an emperor with no clothes,” in Sleboda’s words. The analyst called him “an isolated figure that is growing increasingly unhinged from reality. And now he’s apparently lashing out at the entire Kiev regime leadership.”

Sleboda noted that the United States often supports outright dictators internationally if they serve the country’s geopolitical interests; in fact, one study revealed that the US supports 73% of governments deemed “dictatorships” throughout the world.

“We see what tragic consequences the wave of so-called color revolutions led to,” Putin once remarked, noting covert US-backed regime change operations internationally. “For us, this is a lesson and a warning. We should do everything necessary so that nothing similar ever happens in Russia,” he concluded, suggesting that US efforts to interfere in Russian politics would prove to be futile.

The United States has utilized military power and undercover operations through entities like the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), USAID, and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) to undermine and overthrow governments in Haiti, El Salvador, Afghanistan, Iraq, Bulgaria, Panama, Nicaragua, Libya, Morocco, Grenada, Angola, Australia, Guatemala, Bolivia, Greece, Chile, Uruguay, Ghana, Indonesia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Brazil, the Congo, Ecuador, France, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Italy, Syria, Costa Rica, Iran, Albania, Korea, the Philippines, and China, among other countries, according to author William Blum who extensively documented such efforts in his acclaimed and eye-opening book Killing Hope.

Boeing’s Standards ‘Progressively Declining’ – Top Airline Boss

Company has prioritized financial performance over engineering excellence, according to head of Emirates Airline

US aerospace giant Boeing is in the “last chance saloon” in light of the long decline in the company’s manufacturing performance, Tim Clark, the head of Emirates Airline, has said.

One of the most high-profile figures in aviation, Clark told the Financial Times on Sunday that he had seen a “progressive decline” in Boeing’s standards, which he put down to long-running management and governance missteps, including prioritizing financial performance over engineering excellence. Clark also said he was preparing to send his own engineers to oversee the US plane maker’s production lines.

“They have got to instill this safety culture which is second to none. They’ve got to get their manufacturing processes under review so there are no corners cut etc. I’m sure [chief executive] Dave Calhoun and [commercial head] Stan Deal are on that . . . this is the last chance saloon,” said Clark, who has held senior roles at Emirates since the 1980s and has been the airline’s president since 2003. One of Boeing’s largest customers, Emirates in November placed an order for 95 wide-body Boeing 777 and 787 jets.

Boeing’s previous management made numerous mistakes, the Emirates boss claimed. Those included outsourcing some of its manufacturing and moving parts of the 787 production to South Carolina to cut costs following battles with unions at its primary base north of Seattle, Washington. Boeing lost “skills and competencies” through the move, argued Clark.

He further stated that the US company’s manufacturing processes needed a thorough review, while its management should put aside concerns about financial performance.

“It needs a root and branch look at how it goes about producing aeroplanes and where it produces aeroplanes . . . that’s just good management, good governance and it should be the priority of everybody on the board.

“Not: ‘what is the return on investment? What is the bottom line? What is the free cash flow? What is the shareholder value? What is the share value? What is my bonus?’ No, that will come if you do it right in the first place,” Clark stressed.

The Emirates boss’ comments come as Boeing has seen a new wave of groundings and safety checks following the mid-flight blowout incident of a section of the fuselage on a 737 Max 9 aircraft last month. The US Federal Aviation Administration has imposed a series of restrictions on the 737 MAX jets since then, temporarily prohibiting the company from expanding their production over passenger safety concerns.

Biden Recalls Recent Meeting With Long-Dead French Leader

POTUS erroneously claims having talked to Francois Mitterrand after being elected president

US President Joe Biden appeared to confuse French President Emmanuel Macron for the late Francois Mitterrand, when describing a 2021 G7 meeting at a campaign event on Sunday.

Speaking in Las Vegas, Biden recalled how shortly after being elected president he went to southern England to meet the heads of governments of six other prominent Western economies, whom he inaccurately called “all the NATO leaders.”

“I sat down and I said, ‘America is back.’ And Mitterrand, from Germany – I mean, from France – looked at me and said – said, ‘You know, what – why – how long you back for?’” Biden said.

Mitterrand served as president of France from 1981 to 1995 and died a year after leaving office, aged 79. The official White House transcript of Biden’s speech identifies the person he spoke with at the G7 event, which took place in Cornwall in June 2021, as Emmanuel Macron.

The incumbent US leader is notoriously gaffe-prone, with critics claiming such incidents are becoming more frequent, and citing them as evidence of the 81-year-old politician’s mental decline. During the same address on Sunday, he hailed a $3 billion project for a high-speed railway, set to link Las Vegas to Los Angeles. Biden said people would be able to travel “from here to Las Vegas” in two hours, before correcting himself.

Biden’s supporters have largely downplayed the concerns, while highlighting similar issues affecting ex-President Donald Trump, his presumed Republican challenger in the presidential race. There have been several instances where the 77-year-old appeared to slur his words during his campaign rallies, and he recently appeared to confuse his Republican rival Nikki Haley for former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Though a Biden-Trump rematch in November is seen as almost inevitable, most American voters consider it a bad outcome. In a national UMass-Amherst poll earlier this month, more than half of respondents said they would rather not have to choose between the two at the ballot box. Among Democrats, 37% said it would be better if Biden did not seek a second term, while 29% of Republicans said the same about Trump.
