Even as central banks buy more gold than ever, coin premiums have been driven lower throughout the retail precious metals market. One of the big factors: is disappointing sales from the US Mint.

In addition to keeping sales profitable, the markup on physical gold and silver coins helps cover costs like administration, storage, and transportation. The US Mint is a bureau of the US Department of the Treasury, and in addition to handling gold movements to central banks and fulfilling other duties, it’s a major producer and seller of physical bullion. Its customers are a handful of authorized gold and silver dealers, who then sell the products to retail investors.

The US Mint’s market share is significant enough that when sales there are low (or high) enough, it affects the mark-up rates across the wider bullion market. That’s what we’re seeing now, even as gold shows healthy price action and looks poised to go even higher in the face of global war and weak fiat currencies:

Overall in the 2023 fiscal year, revenue at the US Mint dropped almost 13% despite sales volume increasing 24.5% compared to 2022. The sales increase was driven by the popularity of American Silver Eagles, which wasn’t enough to offset the sharp decline in sales for other bullion products. As CoinNews’s Mike Unser reports:

“Demand for U.S. Mint gold bullion coins saw a significant decline compared to the prior year, with sales of American Gold Eagles dropping by 20.7% to 988,000 ounces and sales of American Gold Buffalos decreasing by 19.2% to 375,000 ounces.”

These are some of the most popular gold coins for bullion investors to stack. With lower sales of these mainstay coins, the US Mint saw a significant subsequent drop in income.

“Consequently, revenue for American Gold Eagles decreased by 17% to $1.9651 billion, while revenue for American Gold Buffalo coins fell by 15.3% to $738.1 million.”

The past two weeks alone have seen major sales declines compared to the US Mint’s average. According to CoinNews.net’s sales data from the US Mint, silver and gold numismatics took one of the biggest hits from losses. For example, 2024 Commemorative Coins saw a 10% drop in sales of the 2024-S Proof Harriet Tubman Half Dollar, which was one of the most significant declines.

Meanwhile, in Asia, premiums are mixed. They’ve notched up higher in China as the Lunar New Year comes to a close, and bullion sales can resume. But in India, it’s the end of the famously gold-soaked wedding season, which always leads to a relative drop in retail demand since gold is a major cultural component in Indian nuptials. With less demand because of this, premiums in India are down compared to previous weeks.

If the downward sales trend continues at the US Mint, it makes for an even better time to buy gold. Bullish momentum combined with lower premiums gives you more bang for your fiat buck. But if the Mint sees a resurgence, the price of gold could go higher — and this time, spot premiums might go up with it.

17-year-olds slashed in remote area of German town during shocking attack

Two teenage girls were brutally attacked and robbed by a ‘North African’ suspect who stabbed them repeatedly during a robbery in Germany this week, according to reports.

The shocking attack unfolded just before 3 a.m. in Erkrath, a town in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The victims, both 17 years old, were sitting together in a covered shelter on a dirt road when a Mercedes coupe with at least two males inside pulled up in front of them, according to Welt.

One of the men exited the vehicle brandishing a knife and demanded the girls hand over their valuables.

When they refused, he began slashing them and took one of the victims’ handbags before fleeing the scene in the Mercedes.

The girls managed to call police and emergency responders arrived a short time later.

Both victims were rushed to hospital, one in critical condition.

A manhunt was immediately launched and a helicopter scoured the region but the suspects could not be located.

“The knife man is said to be between 15 and 22 years old and around 1.75 meters tall. He wore a ‘pot cut’ with dark curls, no beard and was said to have looked North African,” BILD reports.

“According to police, he has full lips, a wide nose and spoke German. His clothes: black sweatpants and a black striped quilted jacket.”

It is unclear if any suspects have been apprehended at the time of this writing.

Biden administration brazenly persecuting journalists making his corrupt regime look bad.

Conservative journalists are finding themselves the targets of oppressive lawfare tactics evidently for exposing Joe Biden’s corruption.

On Friday, footage showed Blaze journalist Steve Baker being made to do a perp walk as he was taken into custody to face charges over his reporting involving the Jan. 6 debacle.

Baker, who attended J6 as an independent journalist, has been reporting on the anomalies surrounding the government’s official narrative of what happened that day, including dispelling false narratives spewed by Capitol Police regarding the timeline of events and the mysterious pipe bomb found at the DNC.

On Friday, after reporting to a federal courthouse in handcuffs, Baker was charged with:

• Knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority
• Disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds
• Disorderly conduct in a capitol building
• Parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a capitol building

The arrest was roundly criticized on social media, with many noting the Biden regime’s so-called preservation of democracy appears to include jailing opposition journalists.

Fortunately, Baker was released shortly after appearing in court.

Likewise, recently ousted CBS News investigative journalist Catherine Herridge, who was fired by her network last month, was held in contempt in federal court on Thursday after refusing to reveal her sources pertaining to reports she wrote for Fox News in 2017 alleging Chinese-American scientist Yanping Chen was under FBI investigation.

Of course, safeguarding sources in order to pursue news stories that benefit the public interest is part and parcel of the press freedom protections enshrined in the First Amendment.

As noted by former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, freedom of the press is ironically under attack by the very administration which claims to champion democracy.

“Those who pontificate about ‘threats to our democracy’ should take a hard look at the threats to freedom of the press,” Ramaswamy stated on X Friday.

Did the person violate military rule or did the left jump the gun?

During Donald Trump’s visit to the U.S. southern border this week, a man in full military uniform stood behind the Republican presidential candidate while he delivered a speech.

Trump Derangement Syndrome-suffering leftists on social media immediately assumed the man was a member of the U.S. Air Force and shunned him for violating code.

Newsweek even posted an article, titled, “Military Presence Behind Donald Trump During Border Speech Raises Alarm.”

One X user tagged the U.S. Air Force account and asked why its general was dressed in uniform at a Trump campaign event, writing, “Last I checked LARPing for a candidate in uniform is not permitted. Figure a General would know that.”

Former congressman and current CNN Senior Political Commentator Adam Kinzinger promoted the fake news.

Several other accounts echoed the false narrative that an Air Force general stood behind Trump.

It was later revealed the man in uniform behind Trump is Major General Thomas Suelzer, who is currently serving as the Adjutant General for the State of Texas under Republican Governor Greg Abbott.

Suelzer’s position of authority over Texas Military Forces is second only to Abbott, and the general was at the Trump event on the governor’s behalf. 

Even after learning Suelzer’s identity, the rabid anti-Trumpers continued attacking him for daring to stand behind the man trying to stop the border invasion.

Former Republican John Jackson, who left the U.S. to fight in defense of Ukraine, wrote, “This is a terrible failure of leadership by Maj. Gen. Thomas Suelzer. It is literally Military 101 that you don’t act in a political capacity while in uniform. This man is utterly incompetent at best. Everyone knew this event was a political stunt. Nodding at racist trash.”

The Texas Major General didn’t just stand with Trump, he also spoke to the nation, telling Americans the state’s National Guard is working to stop the invasion and telling would-be illegals, “If you are around the world contemplating coming to do an illegal entry into the United States of America, YOU NEED TO THINK TWICE about that. Go somewhere else or don’t even begin your journey.”

Several informed X users detailed why it was fine for Suelzer to be at the press conference, with military veteran Mark Hertling pointing out the general left Air Force active duty in 2007 and is now under the command of the Texas governor.
