“Plane Was Nosediving”: United Airlines Boeing 737 Engine Erupts In Flames Over Texas

Dramatic footage shared on social media platform X shows the moment a United Airlines’ Boeing 737 from Houston to Fort Myers had to declare an emergency just minutes into its flight after flames erupted from one of its engines.

The United Airlines flight had to make an emergency landing in Texas minutes after take-off when flames began shooting from one of its engines.

“I remember there was just this bright, flashing light that came through the window, and it sounded like a bomb went off, and then it was just a strobe of fire out the window,” David Gruninger, who was on his way back to Florida on a connecting flight, told local media outlet ABC 13.
According to the flight tracking website FlightAware, Flight 1118, with 167 passengers on board, took off from George Bush Intercontinental Airport at 6:40 pm local time. Just minutes after takeoff, the plane returned to the airport because of the engine issue.
“The plane was nosediving, and the pilot was bringing the plane back up,” passenger Elliot Trexler said, adding, “The plane was also rocking back and forth a lot.”
“And then it just turned into chaos. People were screaming and crying and trying to figure out what was going on,” Gruninger said.
Radio transmission from the pilots described “our left engine, our number one engine,” experienced an issue while climbing through about 10,000 feet.
The plane trip from hell lasted about 33 minutes after takeoff. Pilots landed safely around 7:31 local time—United credited passengers with $200 and a $15 meal voucher.
This adds to the incompetency crisis plaguing Boeing jets following the door plug that ripped off an Alaska Flight 1282 Boeing 737 Max 9 plane earlier this year. The Federal Aviation Administration’s audit of the incident revealed that Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems have “failed to comply with manufacturing quality control requirements.”
“The incompetency crisis continues as diversifying the flight industry moves full speed ahead,” one X user said.

Doctors Offices Are Now Charging Administrative Fees

As if the cost of healthcare rising wasn’t enough on its own, some doctors offices are now charging their patients for administrative tasks, according to a new report from Fox News.
Doctors say administrative tasks are “taking more time away from patient care”, according to the article, which they say hurts their bottom line.
Medical experts informed FOX Business that some are now charging patients for services such as email consultations and additional paperwork, aiming to offset losses from decreased in-person visits.
Robert Pearl, a former CEO of Permanente Medical Group and Stanford University professor, told Fox News that doctors often apply a concierge fee for such access to medical care, a trend gaining momentum as patients sidestep office visits due to fears of escalating out-of-pocket expenses.
Moreover, PwC researchers project a significant 7% surge in health care costs in 2024, marking the most substantial increase in a decade, according to Pearl.
Pearl said: “You find yourself saying, ‘Oh my gosh, if I see the doctor, I got to pay $300, $400, $500. I can’t afford that. Let me send an email.”
“Ultimately, the economics are driving a change that’s basically sapping more and more of the doctor’s time,” he added.
The National Patient Advocate Foundation (NPAF) expresses concern that such measures will further complicate access to care for some patients, the report says.
NPAF spokesperson Caitlin Donovan said: “There’s going to ultimately be people who say, ‘I’m not going to reach out to my doctor because I don’t want to get charged for this.”
“We want there to be trust between the patient and the provider going both ways because that means that there’s going to be better outcomes,” she said.
Pearl responded: “They don’t have enough time to do the job they’re required to do. And this is an opportunity to say, ‘OK, well, if I have to fill out all these forms, I better charge for them, because if I don’t charge for them, I have even less time with my family or to do the activities that I needed in my particular life.’”
Both parties think that AI could wind up leading to the solution.

Farmers clash with police in Warsaw

Protesting farmers clashed with police in Poland’s capital on Wednesday, in a row over grain supplies from Ukraine.
The farmers and their supporters gathered outside the prime minister’s office in Warsaw and marched towards parliament, where they were met by riot police.
Protesters threw rocks and firecrackers at the officers, who responded with pepper spray, tear gas and stun grenades. Sporadic fighting broke out, with police using batons to push back the angry farmers.
Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said 23 “provocateurs” were detained on Wednesday. A total of 13 officers were injured, including one who suffered a “serious” head trauma, Warsaw Police wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Around 30,000 people took part in the protest, according to city hall spokeswoman Monika Beuth. Inspector Robert Szumiata said that although the protest was initially “overwhelmingly peaceful,” there were “groups of people who only sought to confront the police.”

The farmers took to the streets to denounce EU ‘Green Deal’ laws aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change.
“These are absurd regulations that farmers must conform to, which will only make the situation worse and raise production costs and product prices,” one activist told AFP news agency.
Polish farmers have also been blocking checkpoints at the border with Ukraine, arguing that imports of cheap grain and other produce are killing their businesses.
Kiev has denied that Ukrainian grain is being sold in Poland, and has accused the protesters of hurting the Ukrainian economy during its armed conflict with Russia. The blockades “went beyond both economics and morality long ago,”Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said on Sunday.
Ukrainian officials have also claimed that Russia was influencing the protesters in order to damage Kiev’s ties with Poland. Moscow has denied any involvement.

German MP Calls For Attack on Government Buildings In Moscow

Russia’s Ministry of Defense building or the HQ of the country’s intelligence service in central Moscow are legitimate targets that should be attacked, the deputy chairman of the German parliament’s oversight committee, Roderich Kiesewetter, has stated.
The lawmaker, who is a former German Army (Bundeswehr) general staff officer, insisted that Ukraine should take the war to Russia.
“Ukraine should be given the opportunity to take the war to the Russian territory,”Kiesewetter told a talk show on state broadcaster ZDF, noting that Defense Minister Boris Pistorius had already called for the same in April 2023.
“The only thing I will add from my side is that it is also necessary to attack the Russian Ministry of Defense or the intelligence service,” the MP said. “It is absolutely clear that this is not about civilian targets and not about the people, but about explaining to the Russian population that they are the aggressors,” he added.
When asked by the host of the show whether Kiesewetter thought that the attack on Moscow would be rational, the politician responded that those were Pistorius’ words.
“To attack Moscow with Taurus missiles?” the host asked. “No… now you are putting words into my mouth. No, if, within the framework of the agreement, we oblige Ukraine to use missiles only in the occupied territories, then they will act according to this principle,” Kiesewetter argued.
The calls for attack on Russian government buildings come amid the latest diplomatic row between Moscow and Berlin, following the leak of an audio recording in which German military officers discussed a potential attack on the Crimean Bridge.
10% Of Biden 2020 Voters Say They’re Switching To Trump
Last weekend, newly-based, former Democrat darling pollster Nate Silver (who recently vanquished a lying leftist academic for spreading misinformation) penned a Saturday blog post in which he noted that President Biden has a huge problem with swing voters.
While Silver acknowledges that there are “relatively few swing voters” in the US, there are some – “and with the country divided roughly 50/50, they usually determine who wins.”
What’s more, the composition of the electorate has shifted – with a dropoff in those IDing as Democrats loosely corresponding to a rise in those claiming to be independent voters, according to Gallup.
Silver’s point? “something has changed over the past decade or so. The Democratic Party brand no longer has an edge on the Republican brand; voters don’t like either one very much.”
Biden loses 10%
Silver then brings our attention to a tweet from pundit Matt Yglesias – who highlights a NY Times poll that reveals 10% of 2020 Biden voters are now saying they back Trump.
While Yglesias frames it as “insanely banal swing voter stuff,” Silver sees it as far more serious for Democrats.
Via natesilver.net:
I’m a big Yglesias fan, but I’m not sure this take is so boring or so obvious. Here’s a slightly spicy argument, in fact: I suspect that some of the reason that pundits don’t like this take is because the media has become considerably more partisan. In contrast a couple of decades ago, punditry was dominated by newspaper columnists who were milquetoast centrists and TV panelists who were scrupulously nonpartisan. Now, people who comment about politics on blogs and social media tend to be loyal, reliable partisans, aligning with either Democrats or Republicans on nearly every issue. That sort of consistent partisanship is much less common among the broader electorate, although it’s becoming more so.
My theory is that this more partisan species of pundit often implicitly or explicitly advocates for focusing on base turnout because it suits their ideological interests.. These pundits tend to be strong progressives (or conservatives) themselves, and the base-turnout theory implies there’s no trade-off between ideologically-charged policy goals and electoral ones. Read progressive media, for instance, and you’ll often hear that Biden was wise to cancel student loan repayments1 because it would excite young voters, even though student loan relief polls questionably with the electorate overall. I’m not sure I want to get too far into the weeds on Biden’s stance toward the Middle East, but you’ll often hear this argument on Gaza, too. It’s often just assumed (despite poor results for the “uncommitted” protest vote in the Michigan primary on Tuesday) that it would be electorally advantageous for Biden to move to the left by becoming more hawkish toward Bibi Netanyahu, even though Americans overall are still more sympathetic to Israel than Palestine.
The Times/Siena poll that Yglesias alluded to speaks to the potential dangers for Democrats of the base-turnout focus. The poll asked voters who they voted for in 2020 as well as who they plan to vote for in November. This produced a big gap; Biden actually led by 12 points in the recalled 2020 vote, but he trails Trump by 5 points in 2024 voter preferences:
- 2020 recalled vote (excluding nonvoters): Biden 53%, Trump 41%
- 2024 vote (including learners): Trump 48%, Biden 43%
Now, this is a weird result – Biden actually won in 2020 by 4.5 percentage points, not 12. It may reflect the fact that voters sometimes incorrectly recall their previous votes and there can be a bias toward the candidate who won the prior election (in this case, Biden). Nevertheless, this is a bad data point for White House. In the poll, only 83 percent of voters who say they chose Biden in 2020 plan to vote for him this year, whereas 97 percent who voted for Trump plan to vote for Trump again.
These are swing voters, in other words — people who are explicitly stating to pollsters that they are switching their vote from 2020. There are a substantial number of them.
* * *
Not everyone, including Fast Company contributor James Surowiecki, can accept reality:
Yes, 10% of Biden 2020 voters now say they’re going to vote for Trump in 2024, as compared to <1% of Trump 2020 voters who now say they’re going to vote for Biden. They are switching their votes and not just undecided. https://t.co/13BB64wx7c

Of course, the 2024 election will ultimately come down to whether Trump voters can overcome “the Democrats fraudulent voting scheme,” according to the former president.
The upcoming election in November has got to be TOO BIG TO RIG.
