The Italian PM’s strategy is paying off, but arrivals in other EU countries are surging.

Seaborne illegal migration into Italy has seen an unprecedented drop this year as the deterrent policies of Giorgia Meloni’s conservative government have begun to bear fruit, the local daily Il Giornale reported on Tuesday, August 13th.

According to newly published official data, Rome registered a shocking 62.4% drop in illegal arrivals in 2024, with 37,000 migrants landing in Italy as of August 12th compared to nearly 100,000 in the same period last year.

2023 was especially bad in terms of illegal arrivals with the Southern Italian island of Lampedusa being the hardest hit of all landing sites. Around 120 boats carrying between 6-7,000 migrants arrived on the island on a single day in September, prompting commentators and lawmakers alike to describe the event as an “invasion.”

While Italy celebrates, however, other Mediterranean countries are being targeted by the same people smugglers in much higher numbers than before—Spain registered a 155% increase this year, and Greece a whopping 222%—showing that the problem of illegal migration has not gone away but simply pivoted to more vulnerable shores.

Spain is particularly exposed to illegal arrivals in the Canary Islands which are located just 100 km off the coast of West Africa and which continue to experience a record number of landings year by year. Greece’s vast archipelago also provides easy targets for human smugglers from North Africa, but a significant portion of the boats carrying Middle Eastern migrants are opting for the closer Cyprus instead, a tiny nation struggling under the weight of this newfound crisis.

Meanwhile, Meloni’s Italy also excels in “assisted returns,” in which migrants who voluntarily choose to return to their home countries are given administrative, logistical, or financial support to help them re-integrate. To compare, Italy conducted over 9,000 assisted returns to Libya and Tunisia in only the first six months of this year, while the total number in 2023 toward all countries of origin stood at around 3,200.

Despite early criticisms of ineffectiveness, Italy’s strategy for addressing illegal migration appears to be working as intended. It is based on two components: deterrence and diplomacy, working in unison to solve the problem in the middle and long-term as well.

For deterrence, Meloni reformed the country’s immigration system to shorten the asylum procedure, introduce more thorough age verification protocols, ramp up voluntary and involuntary returns, allow longer detention times to prevent failed asylum seekers from disappearing, and eliminate several legal loopholes that allowed both migrants and search and rescue NGOs to easily abuse the system.

The most important factor, however, is said to be Italy’s off-shore asylum centers that are being built in Albania, just across the Adriatic Sea. Since those facilities are not located on EU soil, Italian officials can be even more effective in screening and deporting illegal migrants posing as refugees, who’ll have no chance of escaping the law and disappearing into other EU countries through the Schengen Area.

The project’s future role in deterring even more would-be illegal migrants is hard to overstate considering that it has not even been finished yet. Although the migrant reception centers in Albania were planned to be officially opened by August 1st, setbacks during construction caused months of delays, but Rome still promises that they will be operational before the end of this year. They will be capable of holding and processing up to 36,000 asylum seekers annually, which will be the majority of all sea arrivals if the current decreasing trend continues. 

On the diplomatic front, Meloni’s strategy is to invest into key transit and origin countries throughout Africa which can help combat criminal organizations that facilitate human smuggling in exchange for structural funds that help contribute to their overall macroeconomic stability. After initial setbacks, the scheme now appears to be working well especially with Tunisia, which received Italian (and EU) money to develop its trade and energy infrastructure as well as to mitigate the effects of climate change.

The amount of money that can be had from cancer patients is to die for.

We have learned that eight of the 68 passengers (some media reports are claiming there were only 61 or 62 passengers) aboard the ATR-72 turboprop plant that crashed in a residential area near Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Friday were cancer doctors en route to SBTMO 2024, a cancer and vaccine conference.

There were originally supposed to be 15 cancer doctors aboard the same flight, but seven of them changed their itineraries to take an earlier flight that same day. Those seven survived while the other eight perished along with everyone else on the flight.

It apparently took a while to identify the name of the conference at which these cancer doctors were scheduled to attend. According to “Dom Lucre | Breaker of Narratives” (@dom_lucre) on X, the media “didn’t make it easy” to figure out where these cancer doctors were headed, which begs the question, why?

Pfizer betting big on cancer – were they behind this?

SBTMO, by the way, stands for the Brazilian Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy. Its purpose is to establish voluntary standards and accreditation programs for cellular therapy.

“In a simpler sense, they decide what is considered real or fake in that cancer field,” the Dom Lucre X account explains. “If a treatment or cure is suggested, they decide if it is accredited which determines if the treatment or curr [sic] can be used.”

In other words, the oncologists were traveling to the conference to hear the latest developments in the cancer field. Perhaps there were some important discoveries on the docket that had to be stopped?

Keep in mind that Big Pharma is all about cancer these days. Even more so than vaccines, companies like Pfizer are betting big on new cancer drugs to keep their profits flowing.

Could it be that the doctors on the downed flight had information or discoveries that threatened to make cancer a thing of the past without expensive new drugs? Were the doctors silenced to keep them from upsetting the apple cart?

“They’ve been preventing the cure of cancer for decades,” someone wrote on X, adding that she does not believe in coincidences. “Pharmaceuticals make way too much money off keeping us sick.”

Another agreed, though apparently cancer “has been cured several times” but every single time the people behind it “end up dead and their research vanishes.”

“So a plane that’s been in the air for over an hour comes to a dead stop, then ‘pancakes’ out of the sky like a helicopter and just so happens to have serious decisionmakers in the cancer field aboard?” asked another.

Someone from Brazil who is familiar with what happens at SBTMO 2024 mourned the loss of these eight cancer doctors, whom she described as “experts” whose loss “is a huge blow to the field.”

“What did these cancer doctors know?” asked another, adding to the growing suspicion that this was some kind of conspiracy.

As the conflict in Ukraine reshapes global military tactics, Polish troops adapt by reviving and refining trench warfare skills.

The war in Ukraine has significantly influenced military forces worldwide, prompting many countries to revisit combat training tactics that had long been considered obsolete. The resurgence of trench warfare on modern battlefields has led the Polish military to begin comprehensive trench combat training.

Social media updates from the 17th Mechanized Brigade recently highlighted exercises involving scouts from the Międzyrzecz Brigade. The soldiers participated in a training assembly at the Land Forces Training Center in Wędrzyn, western Poland.

Years ago, an artificial town was constructed at the training center, designed to simulate urban combat. The facility’s usefulness has been particularly appreciated following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, where urban areas have become the scenes of fierce battles. The center in Wędrzyn also serves as a training site for Ukrainian troops.

According to military sources, the facility has been expanded with new infrastructure to better simulate trench warfare. Photos released by the military show two-meter-deep trenches reinforced with wooden beams.

The distinctive zigzag shape of the trenches is designed to protect soldiers from artillery fire. When a shell strikes a trench, the blast wave dissipates sideways. The more turns in the trench, the higher the chance that soldiers inside will survive such attacks.

The exercises also utilized unmanned aerial vehicles, aiming to mimic wartime conditions as closely as possible. Soldiers from the 17th Brigade believe this represents a new standard in military training, elevating their preparedness for modern combat scenarios.
