Saudi Arabia Officially Joins BRICS – Reports
Saudi Arabia on Tuesday officially announced that it has joined the BRICS+ group, with the news carried by state TV.
Riyadh has been in negotiations on its accession to the group for months, with Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan stating last August that all the details on the move would be evaluated before an “appropriate decision” was taken.
At the time, the foreign minister said the BRICS group was “a beneficial and important channel” for bolstering economic cooperation between member countries.
The group, which until January 1 included Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, welcomed five new members on New Year’s Day. Apart from Saudi Arabia, it now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the UAE. Another prospective member, Argentina, made an abrupt U-turn on its accession plans after the presidential election in the country was won by Javier Milei late last year.
The group is expected to grow even larger later this year, with Venezuela seeking to become a permanent member at the next summit in Russia in October 2024.
Moscow has assumed the one-year rotating presidency of the group, with President Vladimir Putin pledging to “facilitate the harmonious integration” of new partners. Some 30 other countries have already expressed their intent in participating in the group’s activities in one form or another, Putin noted.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro spoke on the matter with the Spanish-language edition of Le Monde Diplomatique in an interview published on Monday, arguing that the group represents “humanity’s future,” given its vast economic power.
According to the IMF figures, the expanded BRICS now surpasses the G7, an informal group of the leading Western countries, in terms of GDP at purchasing power parity, accounting for 36% of the world total.
Maduro also slammed the move by his Argentine counterpart, arguing that the decision to scrap the BRICS+ plans was “one of the clumsiest and stupidest things Milei has done” to his country to date. With his decision, Milei has effectively taken the country back to the 19th century, seeking to turn it into a “vassal of the imperial unipolar world,” Maduro suggested.
New York City Council Members Reportedly Weighing Trump Ballot Disqualification
New York City council members are urging the state’s Board of Elections to disqualify former President Donald Trump from the 2024 primary and general election ballots due to his alleged involvement in the events following the 2020 election, the National Review reported on Tuesday.
“The Board of Elections must give effect to the Fourteenth Amendment and its safeguards to protect the integrity of New York’s electoral process, maintain the public’s faith in our democratic system, and respect the rule of law,” councilman Shekar Krishnan is quoted in the report as having written in an email this week to other council members.
Though the report cites several council members as having endorsed Krishnan’s letter, Democratic councilor Robert Holden is quoted in the report as saying that he found the idea of removing a candidate from the ballot without legal cause “troubling.”
“This trend across the nation, including here in New York, is dangerous. If you are against a candidate, you work hard to beat them at the polls, not prevent them from participating in an election,” Holden is quoted as saying.
Other council members are quoted in the report as agreeing with Holden, with some calling the letter a “waste” of the council’s time.
“My colleagues should instead be devoting their energy and efforts towards resolving the ongoing migrant crisis and bringing the budget back under control. New York City is facing some very real problems right now, and Donald Trump being on the ballot here is not one of them,” Council member Jane Ariola is quoted as saying in the report.
Last month, both Maine and Colorado disqualified Trump from the 2024 primary ballot, citing the insurrectionist clause in 14th Amendment.
Both bans are expected to be swiftly appealed in both the state courts and the US Supreme Court.
George Soros’ Estate ‘Swatted’ Over Bogus Shooting Call
The New York estate of infamous US billionaire George Soros became the scene of a potentially dangerous prank before New Year’s Eve.
Authorities were summoned to George Soros‘ Southampton mansion just before New Year’s Eve after a 911 call claimed that a deadly shooting had taken place.
According to the New York Post, an anonymous caller phoned 911 on the evening of December 30 claiming that he shot his wife and threatening to shoot himself.
The address provided by the caller led cops to a mansion belonging to Soros located on Old Town Road in Southampton Village, NY, where it quickly became apparent that the call was false.
“Spoke to security, searched the premises. It was [a] negative problem,” the newspaper quoted one of the officers who responded to the call as saying.
It was not immediately clear whether Soros himself or any of his family members were at the premises when the police arrived, the media outlet noted.
The term “swatting” is derived from the US’ Special Weapons and Tactics or SWAT unit for short. It means calling in a false emergency with the intent of harassing those at the address.
Epstein List to Remain Sealed Until At Least Jan. 22
The trove of court documents including a sealed list of over 150 names related to the deceased billionaire child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein will remain sealed until at least January 22, according to reports
The delay was announced Wednesday in a filing from The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
The extension came after Judge Loretta Preska approved a 30-day extension requested by an unidentified “John Doe 107” who wished to maintain her anonymity out of “a risk of physical harm.”
The filing reads:
Letter filed by John Doe 107. ENDORSEMENT: Doe 107’s request for a 30-day extension is approved. Doe 107 shall, by January 22, 2024, submit to the Court for in camera review an affidavit (1) supporting her assertion that she faces a risk of physical harm in her country of residence and (2) providing detail concerning the hate mail she has received. Doe 107’s counsel may also provide by this date any additional factual support for Doe 107’s contention that unsealing the relevant records would put her at risk of physical harm. SO ORDERED. Pentagon’s ‘Extremism In Our Ranks’ Propaganda Debunked By Their Own Study
Recall 2021… when the Biden FBI deployed counterterrorism resources against concerned parents who showed up at school board meetings, and Gen. Mark Milley told Congress that he wanted “to understand White rage” one month after an enraged father was dragged out of a Loudon County, Virginia school board meeting after his daughter was raped by a transgender boy in the girl’s bathroom – which the school board then covered up.
Remember that?
And instead of addressing the concerns of millions of angry parents who had woken up to a nationwide phenomenon of mentally ill schoolteachers, critical race theory / DEI indoctrination, and transgender boys crushing the dreams of female athletes, the Biden administration turned the whole thing into a ‘white rage’ problem caused by extremist Trump supporters.
In December of 2021, the Pentagon furthered the ‘white rage’ narrative, warning that ‘extremism’ within the ranks was on the rise, which would require ‘detailed new rules’ to prohibit service members from engaging in ‘certain activities.’
The new policy lays out in detail the banned activities, which range from advocating terrorism or supporting the overthrow of the government to fundraising or rallying on behalf of an extremist group or “liking” or reposting extremist views on social media. The rules also specify that commanders must determine two things in order for someone to be held accountable: that the action was an extremist activity, as defined in the rules, and that the service member “actively participated” in that prohibited activity.
Previous policies banned extremist activities but didn’t go into such great detail, and also did not specify the two step process to determine someone accountable. -AP

According to the Wall Street Journal, “Good news: The U.S. military isn’t packed with violent extremists.”
That’s the gist of a new report commissioned by the Pentagon in 2021 and released quietly with little notice in December. The result won’t surprise Americans who have spent time in uniform, but it should calm the media frenzy about right-wing radicals in the armed forces.
After reports that some service members participated in the Jan. 6 riot, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered an independent study to get “greater fidelity” on extremism in the ranks. The think tank tasked with the report, the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA), “found no evidence that the number of violent extremists in the military is disproportionate” to U.S. society. A review of Pentagon data suggested “fewer than 100 substantiated cases per year of extremist activity by members of the military in recent years,” the report says.
The researchers found that “the prevalence of extremist and gang-related activity that are reflected in court-martial opinions is limited to fewer than 20 cases” since 2012, for example.
One conclusion was that the military doesn’t need a new section of the Uniform Code of Military Justice to punish alleged “extremists” in the ranks, and that commanders can simply rely on Article 116 (riot or breach of peace), Article 88 (contempt toward officials), Article 109 (destruction or damage to property), and Article 115 (communication of threats), as well as others.
The researchers also found that “fewer than ten” out of more than 700 Jan. 6 cases involved active members of the military, debunking yet another leftist claim.
