Malfunctioning Facial Recognition Technology may put Innocent Individuals at Risk
Government entities, including seven law enforcement agencies in the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice, have instituted the use of facial recognition to verify or ascertain someone’s identity using an algorithm that matches a human face from a digital image or a video frame against a database of faces.
However, the case of Harvey Eugene Murphy, Jr. is proof that flawed or misused facial recognition systems can put citizens at risk.
Murphy visited his home state of Texas to get his driver’s license renewed at the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Within minutes, he was approached by a police officer who notified him there was a warrant out for him. Murphy said he was not told any details about his supposed crime except for the date the robbery occurred.
“I almost thought it was a joke,” Murphy said. The 61-year-old grandfather was arrested for the armed robbery of a Sunglass Hut in Houston. Murphy’s alibi was that he was back home in California when the theft occurred.
In contrast to law enforcement’s fast action on their “suspected” thief, investigations were too slow. In fact, by the time the Harris County District Attorney’s Office figured he was nowhere in the robbery scene, three men had already sexually assaulted Murphy in a prison bathroom, leaving him with permanent injuries.
“Mr. Murphy’s story is troubling for every citizen in this country,” said Daniel Dutko, the lawyer representing Murphy. “Any person could be improperly charged with a crime based on error-prone facial recognition software, just as he was.”
Murphy’s case is the seventh known case of a wrongful arrest due to facial recognition in the U.S., further highlighting the flaws of a technology already widely adopted by police departments and some retailers.
The said technology is also being used by some British police forces, such as London’s Metropolitan Police. It was also used last year to watch crowds at the King’s Coronation, at a soccer match between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, a concert by singer Beyonce and during the F1 Grand Prix at Silverstone.

The civil liberties group Big Brother Watch said since the Met Police started using facial recognition tech, 85 percent of all matches identified by the system were wrong. In South Wales, 90 percent of matches were incorrect.
“We’ve [personally] witnessed people being wrongly stopped by the police because facial recognition misidentified them,” the group said in a report. Despite these disastrous figures, policing minister Chris Phelps wrote to police chiefs last October urging them to “double the number of [facial recognition] searches by May 2024, so they exceed 200,000 across England and Wales.”
“This dangerously authoritarian technology has the potential to turn populations into walking ID cards in a constant police lineup,” Big Brother Watch Director Silkie Carlo warned.
Consequently, when former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and House of Lords member William Hague jointly released a report in February last year calling for “a secure, private, decentralized digital-ID system,” the prime minister’s spokesman was able to say with a straight face: “There are no plans to introduce digital ID. Our position on physical ID cards remains unchanged. We are already carrying out work to enhance the digitalization of public services.”
Facial recognition is also coming to Canada
Ontario’s York and Peel regional police offices are now implementing a facial recognition system to utilize crime scene images for comparison with mugshots.
Both police agencies have engaged with the Information and Privacy Commission of Ontario to ensure compliance with best practices and privacy standards. Idemia Public Security was selected to provide biometric facial recognition software following the consultation.
To ensure the protection of individual privacy rights, the comparison of digital images will be conducted by the Identification of Criminals Act, which provides the legal framework for the collection and use of such images, authorities claimed.
The police services also stated that individuals whose mugshots and fingerprints have been collected by York Regional Police under the said act may request the destruction of these records.
“Partnering with Peel Regional Police is cost-effective and enables us to collaborate more extensively to make both communities safer,” says Jim MacSween, York Regional Police chief.
However, privacy considerations have been a critical issue in the adoption of biometric capture for law enforcement in the country. Controversy erupted when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and other Canadian police forces were found to have used Clearview AI’s facial recognition technology, which scraped over three billion images from the internet without consent.

Top German Politicians Demand ‘Maximum’ Penalty for Young People Expressing Their Discontent with Unrestricted Migration
German politicians are calling for a group of young people protesting against unrestricted migration to be imprisoned, possibly even given the maximum sentence for a variety of alleged crimes.
The individuals in question are a group of young Germans on vacation in the patio of a bar in Sylt, a small tourist island in the North Sea. The individuals chanted “Deutschland den Deutschen, Auslander raus!” (“Germany for the Germans, foreigners out!”) while dancing to the song “L’Amours Toujours” by Italian DJ Gigi D’Agostino.
The news story broke following a seconds-long video of the incident going viral in German news and social media, sending virtually the entire country into a frenzy with politicians alleging that the youths were sympathizers of Nazi German leader Adolf Hitler.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz even stepped in to condemn the video, calling the youths “repugnant” and their actions “not acceptable.”
“This video is worrisome because it shows that it’s not just the disenfranchised who are becoming radicalized, but that radicalization is also coming from the heart of society,” accused federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in his statement.
Bundestag (Parliament) President Barbel Bas of the ruling left-wing Social Democratic Party has called for the youths to receive the harshest punishment possible, including “perhaps even the maximum penalty.”
The young adults are being accused of violating Section 86a of the German Criminal Code, which refers to “unconstitutional symbols.” If found guilty, the youths could be sentenced to up to three years in prison. If the kids are also found guilty of “incitement against the people,” they could be given another five years to their prison sentences.
“This video exists, and certain people can be identified,” said Bas. She added that “such things, anti-constitutional slogans, are to be punished… I hope they get a decent punishment.”
Migrants committing acts of violence all over Germany
Denes Albert, writing for the Central Europe-focused news website ReMix, noted that while some of Germany’s highest-level politicians weigh in on a video wherein the youths are not being violent and “nobody was physically attacked, raped or maimed,” foreigners and people with foreign backgrounds continue to commit acts of extreme violence all over Germany in incidents that are also videoed and shared on social media.
“The German government does not comment on them because these videos do not fit the narrative,” warned Albert.

“It is important to note that these young people did not commit any violent robbery, did not rape anybody, nor did they swing machetes at each other in daylight,” wrote Albert. “For the category of gang rape, Germany is experiencing record-high numbers and this is, quite simply put, driven by mass immigration – this is a statistical fact. And yet, this data point barely sparked even the tiniest fraction of the outrage this video has produced, including around-the-clock news coverage and public comments from top politicians, including the chancellor.”
The conservative, anti-mass immigration party Alternative for Germany (AfD) noted that incidents of gang rapes have hit a record high in Germany in 2022, with certain days experiencing as many as two reported incidents, and with the total number for the year hitting 789, higher than the previous year’s 677 and the previous record-high of 710 in 2019.
“The figures on the composition of the perpetrators are also clear and show that all claims that there is no connection between mass migration and the collapse of internal security are lies,” wrote the AfD on its official Facebook page. “There were 471 suspected perpetrators with a German passport compared to 472 foreigners – so around half of the perpetrators are foreigners, although their share of the total population is ‘only’ around 14 percent. However, the 50 percent does not include the number of German suspects with foreign origins! The main countries of origin of the foreign suspects were once again Syria and Afghanistan.”

France: Zambian Asylum Seeker will Not Serve Jail Time for Sexually Assaulting 13-Year-Old Daughter of His Friend
A 52-year-old Zambian migrant was sentenced to 18 months of probation after sexually assaulting the 13-year-old daughter of his friend, which means he will not serve any prison time unless he violates his probation.
The sentencing, handed out in a Caen judicial court on May 28, 2024, was for a case dating back to Feb. 19, 2023, in Calvados.
On that day, after spending an evening with his friend, the Zambian migrant’s friend offered to take him home along with two other guests. The 13-year-old daughter of the driver also came along.
The 52-year-old Zambian man, who is seeking asylum in France, ended up sitting in the backseat with the daughter, where he began sexually assaulting the girl, according to French news outlet Ouest France.
The 13-year-old testified in court, saying: “He touched my leg, then my chest. He forced me to kiss him, he took my hand and put it on the fly of his pants.” She stated that the Zambian man also penetrated her anus with his fingers.
The defendant admits to sexually assaulting the girl but denies penetrating her, saying: “I ask myself the question every day: why did I do that? It was the first time in my life.”
The mother of the victim said in court that her daughter has since tried to commit suicide two times due to the incident.
“She was already fragile but what happened accentuated her condition,” said an expert psychiatrist during the trial.
The prosecutor said the defendant is a sexual predator, saying, “As the psychiatrist who examined him said, there is a sort of sexual fixation in the defendant’s life. The impulse towards the victim, which he does not explain and for which he expresses no regret, is particularly serious and worrying.”
Due to the nature of the crime, the age of the victim, and the fact that she has suffered grave psychological harm due to the incident, the prosecutor was seeking two years of imprisonment, deportation, and judicial monitoring of the defendant.
However, the judge issued no jail time at all, instead giving the defendant a suspended sentence and probation, along with a ban on contact with the victim and orders to leave French territory. However, less than 10 percent of those people with deportation orders in France are actually forced to leave in the end, with some nationalities having as low as a 0.2 percent deportation rate.
The Zambian man has also been ordered to pay €1,000 to the victim for “moral” damage and €1,800 to the victim’s mother for legal fees.

UK Issues Urgent Warnings About Horrifying Psychiatric Side Effects of Popular Allergy Medication
The U.K. has issued an urgent warning about one of the most popular allergy and asthma medications on the market due to its potential to cause neuropsychiatric issues ranging from nightmares and depression to thoughts of suicide.
The U.K. government’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) recently announced that it will be adding stronger warnings to the informational insert in the asthma and allergy drug Montelukast, the active ingredient in Singulair, in the wake of ongoing reports from patients and caregivers alike about its neuropsychiatric risks. A review conducted by the MHRA found that many patients are unaware of these dangers.
The drug has already been associated with side effects such as flu-like symptoms, stomach pains, coughs and headaches. Now, warnings on the box will point to risks such as depression, hallucinations, insomnia, attention and memory issues, agitation, anxiousness, sleep disturbances and suicidal behavior.
It is believed that the drug’s inhibition of the GPR17 receptor on glial cells and neurons could be related to these effects as it can disrupt normal brain functioning.
FDA issued black box warning for montelukast
The U.K. joins more than a dozen other countries that have issued similar warnings about the drug. In 2020, the FDA issued a boxed warning for it, which is the highest type of safety warning a medication can receive. The agency also mandated that every patient taking the drug receive a medication guide that explains how to take the drug safely and its potential risks. The agency also emphasized in a press release that there are several other medications that can effectively treat allergies without these side effects.
However, in February, New York Attorney General Letitia James asked the FDA to take stronger action on the drug, pointing to a rise in mental health incidents despite the black box warning and calling for greater awareness and better safeguards to protect young people who use the medication. Data shows that children are more susceptible to the neuropsychiatric dangers of the drug than adults.
Unfortunately, many of the people who take the drug are younger. Because it can help to manage asthma and allergies in pill form, it is often given to children and the elderly who struggle to use inhalers properly. In fact, it is even available in powders that can be mixed with food or drinks and chewable tablets, making it easily accessible to a range of patients.
Montelukast works by targeting key elements in inflammatory responses to allergens known as leukotrienes. These are what tighten the muscles in the airway and increase the production of mucus, which can manifest as tightness in the throat and coughing; blocking these chemicals can help to alleviate these symptoms.
The drug has been shown in studies to cross the blood-brain barrier, and it is known to interact with the essential brain antioxidant glutathione.
According to a recent review of the FDA’s adverse events reporting system carried out by The Epoch Times, there were nearly 35,000 reports of adverse events related to Montelukast, and more than 28,000 of them were considered severe. They note that more than 22 percent of the severe cases involve children younger than 17. More than 1,000 deaths have been linked to Montelukast.
Sadly, the black box warning has done little to deter doctors from prescribing the drug. In 2021, 31 million prescriptions for Montelukast were issued in the U.S. alone. Although the FDA advises people to only use the drug if other treatments, such as steroid nasal sprays, antihistamines and allergy shots, are not effective, numerous Americans are still taking the drug and putting themselves at risk of serious neuropsychiatric effects.
