Could Trump Plug the Anchor Baby Loophole?
If Donald Trump is elected in November (not a foregone conclusion) would he attempt to plug the anchor baby loophole?
That’s the insane policy by which babies born to illegal alien mothers on U.S. soil receive automatic birthright citizenship.
Thus, American nationality policy is taken from U.S. lawmakers and turned over to foreign lawbreakers.
It’s outrageous.
A recent NBC article covers this issue.
“Trump’s call to end birthright citizenship would face a mountain of opposition,” the headline reads.
In May of last year, Trump released a campaign video … saying he would sign an executive order on day one of his presidency that would ensure that children born to parents who do not have legal status in the U.S. will not be considered U.S. citizens.
“The United States is among the only countries in the world that says even if neither parent is a citizen or even lawfully in the country, their future children are automatic citizens the moment the parents trespass onto our soil,” Trump said in the video.
The usual suspects scream bloody murder, but many ordinary Americans would support plugging this ridiculous loophole.
Birthright citizenship has long been understood to be required under the Constitution’s 14th Amendment, which states: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.” The language was included in the constitutional amendment enacted after the Civil War to ensure that Black former slaves and their children were recognized as citizens.
It was drafted to guarantee the citizenship of black former slaves, not for the children of illegal invaders.
“Litigation is a certainty. It’s directly in the teeth of the 14th Amendment. It would essentially be an attempt to tear down one of the core constitutional protections that has been a key part of our country,” ACLU lawyer Omar Jadwat told NBC.
On the contrary, it would be an attempt to abolish a bad policy.
Under Trump’s proposal, at least one parent would need to be a citizen or legal resident for a child to receive birthright citizenship. He indicated in his video that the policy would not apply retroactively. The order, Trump said, would also address so-called “birth tourism,” a situation in which Republicans claim people visit the U.S. toward the end of a pregnancy in order to ensure the child is born a U.S. citizen.
Birth tourism is a real phenomenon and it’s another reason this policy must be changed.
Mark Krikorian, director of the Center for Immigration Studies, is quoted in the article.
Krikorian’s group has previously said that there could be up to 400,000 children born per year to undocumented parents and thousands of children born as a result of birth tourism every year.
None of these children should be U.S. citizens.
Aside from an executive order, there are other things a President Trump could do.
The Trump campaign has said the president would order the Social Security Administration to refuse to issue Social Security numbers to newborn children without proof of the parents’ immigration status. He would issue a similar order to the State Department regarding passports.
Krikorian… favors that approach as it would not require any action from Congress and would immediately prompt a lawsuit that would get the legal issue before the Supreme Court in short order.
So how would that case turn out? How would the Supreme Court rule?
“It’s something that the Supreme Court may well decide against the president if he were to take this step,” Krikorian said.
And then?
If Trump loses that case, then the next step is clear, he [Krikorian] added: There would need to be an effort to start the difficult process of amending the Constitution.
Yes, that would be worth it.
If Trump is elected, he should issue an executive order and take other steps to plug the anchor baby loophole.
If that approach fails, the Constitution must be amended.

US Deploys Forces to Defend Israel
Washington has ordered more destroyers, cruisers, and an additional fighter squadron to the Middle East to defend Israel amid rising tensions with Iran, the US Defense Department said on Friday.
In addition, the US has ordered the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group to relieve the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier currently deployed in the Middle East.
The announcement comes amid rising tensions after this week’s killing of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Both Hamas and Iran have blamed Israel for the attack and have promised revenge. Iran also stated that the US bears partial responsibility for the attack as a “supporter and accomplice” of Israel.
While West Jerusalem has neither confirmed nor denied any involvement, it has repeatedly threatened to take out the Hamas leadership over the group’s October 7 attack on Israel, which took the lives of around 1,200 Israelis and led to more than 250 being taken hostage.
The subsequent Israel-Hamas war has sparked escalating tensions in the wider Middle East. Iran and Israel exchanged direct fire in April after Israel struck an Iranian Embassy compound in Syria.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered adjustments to the US military posture to help defend Israel, a Pentagon press release published on Friday said.
On top of the aircraft carrier group, the deployed forces will include “additional ballistic missile defense-capable cruisers and destroyers,” as well as an extra fighter squadron. “The Department is also taking steps to increase our readiness to deploy additional land-based ballistic missile defense,” the statement said.
The US defense secretary informed his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant, about the planned moves in a phone call on Friday morning, spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said earlier. “The secretary reiterated ironclad support for Israel’s security and informed the minister about additional measures to include ongoing and future defensive force posture changes that the department will take to support the defense of Israel.”
The administration of President Joe Biden is “convinced” that Iran will attack Israel within days and is preparing to counter it, Axios reported on Thursday, citing three US officials.
Biden spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by phone to reiterate American support for West Jerusalem, a White House press release on Thursday said. The two leaders discussed efforts to “support Israel’s defense against threats, including against ballistic missiles and drones, to include new defensive US military deployments.”

“Millions” Wasted on Electric School Busses as Maryland Pivots Back to Diesel
A school district in Maryland is finding out just how costly virtue signaling can wind up being.
Maryland’s largest school district in Montgomery County found out via an Inspector General’s report that implementing electric busses “led to millions of dollars in wasteful spending”, according to WTOP.
The wasteful spending was caused in part by late deliveries and maintenance issues, according to the IG report.
The report said that at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in October 2022, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) announced that its 326 new electric buses would save 6,500 gallons of fuel daily and cut costs by 50%.
And then reality set in. Since entering into a $168 million contract for the buses, MCPS has faced significant delays, WTOP reports.
The county’s Office of the Inspector General reported that the buses were consistently delivered late. Dozens of buses scheduled for fiscal year 2022 arrived only after Christmas, instead of at the start of the school year as required.
“MCPS’s failure to hold the contractor accountable to the terms of the contract and their decision not to include provisions to offset incurred expenses has led to millions of dollars in wasteful spending,” the IG report said.
A similar issue occurred in fiscal year 2024. Of the 120 buses slated for delivery, only 37 arrived by the end of September, 69 between October and December, and 14 more between January and April.
The report also highlighted mechanical and charging failures, which rendered many buses inoperable for extended periods. From February 2022 to March 2024, buses failed to complete routes 280 times, with repairs taking an average of 13 days, and more than half exceeding five working days, according to WTOP.
Consequently, in October 2023, the school board approved the purchase of 90 diesel buses for over $14.7 million to address the shortfall.
