Gates Foundation Awards $4M Grant to Fund Digital ID Initiative
The Gates Foundation continues to bankroll various initiatives around the world aimed at introducing digital ID and payments by the end of this decade.
The scheme is known as the digital public infrastructure (DPI), and those pushing it include private or informal groups like the said foundation and the World Economic Forum (WEF), but also the US, the EU, and the UN.
And now, the UK-based AI and data science research group Alan Turing Institute has become the recipient of a renewed grant, this time amounting to $4 million, given by the Gates Foundation.
This has been announced as initial funding for the Institute’s initiative to ensure “responsible” implementation of ID services.
The Turing Institute is presenting its work that will be financed by the grant over the next three years as a multi-disciplinary project focused on positive issues, such as ensuring that launching DPI elements (like digital ID) is done with privacy and security concerns properly addressed.
But – given the past and multi-year activities of the Gates Foundation, nobody should be blamed for interpreting this as an attempt to actually whitewash these key issues – namely privacy and security – that opponents of centralizing people’s identities through digital ID schemes consistently warn about.
In announcing the renewed grant, the Turing Institute made it clear that it considers implementing “ID services” a positive direction, which according to the organization improves anything from inclusion, access to services and to human rights.
But apparently, some “tweaking” around privacy and security (or at least “enhancing” the perception of how they are handled in digital ID programs) – is needed. Hence, perhaps, the new initiative.
“The project aims to enhance the privacy and security of national digital identity systems, with the ultimate goal to maximize the value to beneficiaries, whilst limiting known and unknown risks to these constituents and maintaining the integrity of the overall system,” the Institute said.

A lot of big words, and positive sentiment – but, in simpler words, what the statement amounts to is a promise to somehow “auto-magically” cover all the bases. That is – at once secure the benefits while obliterating the negatives. (Maybe the Institute has a spare bridge to sell, too /s)
The worry here is that this could be yet another Gates Foundation PR blitz aimed at improving the image of the mistrusted, by rights-minded people, “DPI” push – a distrust that in no insignificant part stems from not trusting its biggest proponents as having any genuinely noble intentions to begin with.
An interesting piece of information that we do learn from the announcement is that every year, “billions of dollars are being invested to develop more secure, scalable, and user-friendly identity (digital ID) systems.”
US Sends Submarine to Cuba After Russian Ships Arrive
An American attack submarine has docked at the US base of Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, a day after a four-ship Russian task force sailed into Havana on a long-range expedition.
USS Helena, a Los Angeles-class boat, arrived on Thursday for a “routine port visit,”the US Southern Command said in a statement.
“The vessel’s location and transit were previously planned,” SOUTHCOM added, noting that the Helena is “conducting its global maritime security and national defense mission.”
AP described the submarine’s arrival as “a show of force” by Washington, in response to the presence of Russian ships so close to US shores.
A four-vessel task force of the Russian Navy’s Northern Fleet sailed into Havana on Wednesday. Leading the group was the missile frigate Admiral Gorshkov, along with the Yasen-class nuclear-powered submarine Kazan, two of Russia’s most modern naval assets.
Two support ships, the oil tanker Pashin and salvage tug Nikolay Chiker, accompanied the task force to the Caribbean, in what Moscow described last month as a “long-distance expedition” intended to “show the flag” and “ensure a naval presence in operationally important areas.”

The Russian Defense Ministry has made no further comments on the flotilla’s mission, leading to intense speculation in the US that its presence could be a message about the actions of Washington and its allies in Ukraine.
“Clearly this is them signaling their displeasure about what we’re doing for Ukraine,” White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said earlier this week, adding that the US had “no indication and no expectation that nuclear weapons will be at play here.”
The Cuban government has since stated that the Russian ships were not equipped with nuclear missiles, and that their mission was in full accordance with international law.
The Gorshkov and the Kazan practiced long-range sea strikes while en route to Cuba, as several US Navy vessels shadowed them from a distance.
“We of course take it seriously, but these exercises don’t pose a threat to the US,” Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told reporters on Wednesday.
The Kazan was commissioned in 2021, while the Gorshkov entered service in 2018. The Helena, on the other hand, dates back to 1987.
On Wednesday, just before the Helena was dispatched to Cuba, the US Navy announced that one of its crew members had died last month. The body of Sonar Technician Submarine 3rd Class Timothy Sanders was discovered on board the submarine while it was moored at Naval Station Norfolk on May 24. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is investigating the case.

Video: Biden Wanders Off During G7, Reined Back In by Italian PM
Joe Biden again sparked concerns over his declining mental fitness during the G7 summit in Italy Thursday, with the Democrat presidential nominee caught wandering off amid a photo op with world leaders.
Viral footage showed Biden standing beside political leaders from the G7 countries captivated by skydivers who landed nearby, at which point he made a beeline toward one of them.
At this point, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stepped in as his handler, giving the 81-year-old a tug on his suit and redirecting his focus, as other world leaders moved over several steps to where Biden was now standing.
