US and Israel Bracing for Imminent Iranian Attack – Report

Tehran will likely launch a series of strikes on Israel within 48 hours, Axios sources expect

The US and Israel are continuing preparations for a major attack by Iran in retaliation for the assassination of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, Axios reported on Saturday, citing sources. The assault is anticipated to begin on Monday.

According to two unnamed US officials, Gen. Michael Kurilla, the head of US Central Command, has arrived in the region for a preplanned visit that is likely to focus on efforts to mobilize the same broad international and regional coalition that defended Israel from a previous major Iranian attack in April.

Tensions in the Middle East have reached the boiling point in recent days, after Iran accused Israel of killing Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in a bombing in Tehran. While Israel has neither confirmed nor denied orchestrating the hit, it did admit to eliminating Hezbollah leader Fouad Shukr in Beirut, who it said was responsible for an attack on a soccer field in the Golan Heights that killed 12 minors.

With the Iran promising to retaliate, the Israeli military has been put on high alert, and the US – its main ally – has increased its presence in the region.

Axios sources suggested that Iran’s attack will follow the same playbook as in April, when Tehran launched a retaliatory strike on Israel in response to what it claimed was West Jerusalem’s bombing of its consulate in Syria. That assault involved hundreds of drones and missiles, but Israeli officials insisted the damage was minimal.

At the same time, officials told the outlet that the upcoming strike could be more massive and involve Hezbollah forces in Lebanon, adding that they do not know whether Iran and Hezbollah will conduct coordinated or separate strikes. They also said they believe Tehran and Hezbollah are now finalizing their plans, which must be approved at the highest political level.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden’s administration is reportedly concerned that Washington and West Jerusalem will find it much more difficult than in April to rally a coalition to repel an Iranian attack, as the tensions caused by Haniyeh’s assassination are directly linked to the Hamas-Israel war. As fighting rages in Gaza, Israel has come under heavy flak for its operation in the Palestinian enclave, which has resulted in unprecedented destruction and the deaths of thousands.

British Government Advisor Calls for Lockdowns To Tackle Unrest

Baron Walney called for COVID-style lockdowns to tackle unrest after the murder of three schoolgirls by the son of a Rwandan immigrant

An advisor to Britain’s Labour government has suggested using COVID-style lockdowns to tackle growing unrest, as protestors clash with police and counter-protestors across the UK.

John Woodcock, Baron Walney, a former MP and the UK government’s advisor on political violence and disruption, told Times Radio that the government should be prepared to implement lockdown measures to tackle unrest.

He said the British public will back measures they “feel are necessary to get this situation under control.”

“I think the government and new ministers will understand the British public will back them in whatever measures they feel is necessary to get this situation under control.

“Hopefully we can see this petering out now over the next few days and the extra effort which is being put on forces being able to have effect.

“But if that isn’t the case, I think the British public will back further action from ministers in this emergency to get things under control.

“Back in Covid, they were prepared to back measures that were needed in that situation and I think they would take a similar approach to keeping rioters off the streets now given the scale of damage that has been done to communities.”

Tensions across the UK remain extremely high after the murder of three schoolgirls by Axel Muganwa Rudakubana, the son of a Rwandan immigrant, at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport.

Videos have been circulating widely on social media of roving Muslim gangs armed with weapons in northern towns and cities, including a group calling itself the “Muslim Defence League.” The British police have been accused of “turning a blind eye” to the violence of these groups, while viciously attacking protestors.

One video shows a British policeman apparently telling a gang of Muslim men to discard their weapons at a local mosque.

Police liaison tells a group of Muslims in Stoke that, “If you have any weapons discard them at the mosque”.

US Gen X and Millennials Have Increased Risk of 17 Types of Cancer

Incidence and mortality rates for cancers continue to grow among younger generations

US Gen X-ers and Millennials have an increased risk of 17 different types of cancers, including breast, pancreatic and gastric cancers, according to a new study. As well as incidence rates, mortality rates have also continued to rise in younger generations.

“These findings add to growing evidence of increased cancer risk in post-Baby Boomer generations, expanding on previous findings of early-onset colorectal cancer and a few obesity-associated cancers to encompass a broader range of cancer types,” said Dr. Hyuna Sung, lead author of the study.

The researchers behind the study, published in The Lancet Public Health, looked at incidence data from over 23 million cases of 34 different kinds of cancer and mortality data from over seven million deaths from 25 types of cancer. Subjects were aged 25-84 years, and the data covered the period 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2019. Data were taken from the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries and the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics.

Subjects were separated into birth cohorts to allow comparison between incidence and mortality rates stretching back into the early twentieth century.

The researchers discovered that incidence rates increased with each successive birth cohort born since approximately 1920 for eight out of the total of 34 cancers. The incidence rate was between two and three times higher in the 1990 birth cohort than in the 1955 birth cohort for pancreatic, kidney, and small intestinal cancers in both men and women, and for liver cancer in women.

Incidence rates increased in younger cohorts, after a decline in older birth cohorts, for nine of the remaining 26 cancers including a specific kind of breast cancer, uterine corpus cancer, colorectal cancer, non-cardia gastric cancer, gallbladder cancer, ovarian cancer, testicular cancer, anal cancer in men, and Kaposi sarcoma in men.

The incidence rate for cancers in the 1990 birth cohort ranged from 12% for ovarian cancer to 169% for uterine corpus cancer higher than the rate in the birth cohort with the lowest rate.

Mortality rates also increased in successively younger birth cohorts alongside incidence rates for liver cancer (women only), uterine corpus, gallbladder, testicular, and colorectal cancers.

The study does not investigate why the incidence and mortality rates have increased so dramatically over the last century, but changes in diet, lifestyle and exposure to harmful chemicals are likely to be responsible.

Maui Wildfire Victims Secure Billion Settlement

Over 2,000 victims of last year’s devastating wildfires will receive compensation

Thousands of victims of the catastrophic Maui wildfires of 2023 will receive a $4 billion settlement, it was announced on Friday night.

The settlement will resolve all tort claims against seven different parties— the state of Hawai‘i, County of Maui, Hawaiian Electric, Kamehameha Schools, West Maui Land Co., Hawaiian Telcom, and Spectrum/Charter Communications—for their role in the death and destruction caused by the wildfires on August 8 2023. Over 2,200 claims will be settled.

Although the fires were initially blamed on climate change, including by Hawaii Governor Josh Green and White House “energy czar” John Podesta, investigations revealed critical failings by the state’s main utility provider, and that the cause was fallen power lines.

As a result, the government of Maui County filed a lawsuit against the Hawaii Electric Company and its subsidiaries alleging failure to maintain their system and power grid, as well as neglecting their duty to “properly maintain and repair the electric transmission lines, and other equipment including utility poles associated with their transmission of electricity, and to keep vegetation properly trimmed and maintained so as to prevent contact with overhead power lines and other electric equipment.”

A press release was issued to announce the settlement, which remains subject to final documentation and court approval.

“Today, Governor Josh Green, M.D., announced a historic settlement to resolve all tort claims arising from the Maui wildfires,” the release says.

“Less than a year after devastating wildfires on Maui, the seven defendants – state of Hawai‘i, County of Maui, Hawaiian Electric, Kamehameha Schools, West Maui Land Co., Hawaiian Telcom and Spectrum/Charter Communications – undertook significant efforts to find a resolution that addresses the needs and ensures the well-being of plaintiffs, all affected individuals, and their families.

“Under the proposed terms of the global settlement agreement, which remains subject to final documentation and court approval, the seven defendants will pay $4.037 billion to provide compensation to all those who have brought claims for compensation arising from the Aug. 8, 2023 windstorms and wildfires on Maui, including the approximately 2,200 affected parties who filed lawsuits. The state of Hawaiʻi would contribute to the settlement in addition to its $65 million contribution to the One ʻOhana Fund.”

In addition to the failures of the state and utility companies that helped cause the fires, the tragedy on Maui was made yet worse by confusion and obstacles that prevented residents from fleeing. Terrified residents found exit routes blocked by barricades. Those who simply waited in their cars were engulfed by the flames.

“One family swerved around the barricade and was safe in a nearby town 48 minutes later, another drove their four-wheel-drive car down a dirt road to escape,” reported the Associated Press.

“One man took a dirt road uphill, climbing above the fire and watching as Lahaina burned. He later picked his way through the flames, smoke and rubble to pull survivors to safety.

“But dozens of others found themselves caught in a hellscape, their cars jammed together on a narrow road, surrounded by flames on three sides and the rocky ocean waves on the fourth. Some died in their cars, while others tried to run for safety.”
