The Most Criminal Migrant in Germany? One Asylum Seeker Terrorizes Small Town

One Moroccan migrant, who was supposed to have been deported years ago, has an incredibly long list of offenses, and most recently triggered four police operations in just 24 hours.

Even as German authorities shut down press outlets critical of mass immigration, the country has never seen so much crime from foreigners, with the share of foreign crime hitting a record high in 2023. To exemplify this trend, the case of the small town of Apolda in the eastern German state of Thuringia highlights one of the most extreme cases in the entire country. There, a Moroccan asylum seeker has been terrorizing the small town for nearly 10 years, with local authorities seemingly powerless to stop the mayhem.

The 42-year-old Moroccan migrant has had his asylum application rejected numerous times and despite committing crimes nearly non-stop, attempts to deport him have been unsuccessful, as the Moroccan government refuses to accept him back despite German authorities confirming his identity. Born in Casablanca in 1982, the man is known to Interpol for various crimes, but Moroccan authorities deny that he is their citizen.

The man’s asylum application was already rejected in 2014 since he entered Germany through Italy. At that time, he was supposed to be sent back to Italy under Dublin rules, which posited that migrants are supposed to remain in the first country they register; however, for millions of migrants, these rules were completely disregarded. In April 2015, authorities finally managed to send him back to Italy, but just four days later, he made his way back to Germany despite having a five-year residence and entry ban.

Charged with 46 crimes

Upon his return, he was arrested numerous times for resisting arrest, assault, property damage, and threats. The police launched 46 cases against him, and in 2016, a regional court in Erfurt sentenced him to 23 months in prison.

While imprisoned, he submitted an unsuccessful asylum application, and in 2017, authorities issued an order that he must be “forcibly required to leave the country.” However, upon being released from prison in July 2017, he attacked yet another police officer in his newly assigned asylum center and was arrested for a drug offense.

Charged with 50 more crimes

It gets much worse from there. In April 2019, he was imprisoned once again after committing 50 additional crimes, including physical assault, theft, trespassing, multiple fraudulent benefits claims, resisting arrest, and property damage. At this point, he had close to over 100 crimes since arriving in Germany, but that would be far from the end of his criminal record.

At this point, even other migrants were growing tired of the Moroccan, and residents in his own asylum accommodation began a petition to have the man removed, which was signed by over 146 residents and employees in November 2019.

Once the man was released from prison, he immediately began committing more crimes in the autumn of 2022 and was arrested in July 2023 for bodily harm, for which he was imprisoned again until May of this year. Upon returning from prison to his asylum accommodation, he threatened the residents, insulted police officers, and the next day, demanded cash from the district office in an “extremely aggressive” manner and then spat at officers.

No help from above

Local authorities have gotten so desperate that they are appealing to state Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow for help, with district administrator Christiane Schmidt-Rose (CDU) of the Thuringian district of Weimarer Land and Apolda Mayor Olaf Müller (CDU) writing a letter to Ramelow, where they detailed the extreme nature of the asylum seeker’s crimes.

“These recent incidents have once again made it clear that the offender in question cannot be controlled,” reads the letter. The letter notes that most recently, at the end of July, after being released from prison, he triggered four police operations within 24 hours and officers had to arrest him using force after the fourth operation.

Notably, the officials who wrote the letter are not asking that the man be deported, which is not possible in Germany due to various laws, including Morocco’s refusal to take the man back. Instead, they want to pass the problem on to someone else. They are requesting concrete action from the state prime minister and that the offender to be placed in another district or city.

Scholz Praises Press Freedom While Saying Some Opinions are ‘Forbidden’

German chancellor contradicts himself in comments on right-wing magazine ban.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday spoke for the first time about the interior ministry’s decision to ban the right-wing magazine Compact. At a press conference, Scholz defended the ban, saying “freedom of the press includes being able to say a lot of nonsense, but there are limits that you can’t overlook.”

Seemingly contradicting himself many times on the matter, he said he is a “champion of press freedom,” which is of “the utmost importance for democracy in Germany,” but then went on to say there are “of course opinions that are forbidden in Germany,” including, for example, the glorification of national socialism or anti-semitism.

Compact magazine, an anti-establishment, government-critical publication, was banned on Tuesday, July 16th, for “inciting hatred” and “aggressively propagating the toppling of the political order.” Interior Minister Nancy Faeser called it “a central mouthpiece of the right-wing extremist scene.”

However, the move seems more like the action of a government that wants to silence voices it disagrees with. Experts on constitutional law say the ban amounts to nothing less than an attack on the freedom of the press. Editor-in-chief Jürgen Elsässer emphasised that no court cases brought against Compact could substantiate the accusations of racism, antisemitism, or incitement to violence—claims he rejects.

Olaf Scholz says authorities prepared the ban very carefully, examined all possible legal questions, and the decision was made “for good reason.” When asked whether editorial offices in Germany could now be closed, the chancellor said there are “crimes that must not be committed.”

However, Compact magazine is not accused of having committed crimes. It wasn’t banned under the Criminal Code, which regulates the press, but under association, law which is not protected by the freedom of the press.

The magazine filed a lawsuit against the ban on Wednesday. The German Compact magazine should not be confused with the U.S. publication of the same name.

Fortune 500 Companies to Incur More than Billion in Losses from CrowdStrike Outage – and That’s Excluding Microsoft

CrowdStrike issues apology and fix, loses stock value.

The damage from the huge IT outage caused by CrowdStrike on machines running Microsoft software last week that brought air traffic to a standstill, left some hospitals unable to provide certain services, and rendered many businesses unable to operate is still being tallied, but the modeling and insurance services firm Parametrix has already come up with an estimated price tag – and it’s quite steep.

According to their calculations, the total direct financial loss that American Fortune 500 companies can expect to incur as a result of the fiasco is an incredible $5.4 billion – and that is not including Microsoft’s losses. They believe that cyber insurance will likely only cover somewhere from 10 to 20% of these losses, which would be between $540 million and $1.08 billion. They’re attributing this low coverage to the big risk retentions of many companies and the fact that a lot of them likely have low policy limits compared to the potential loss.

When averaged out across the Fortune 500 companies as a whole, the loss for each is $44 million, but it is important to keep in mind that the actual loss will depend on the industry. For example, manufacturing firms could see losses of around $6 million, while airlines could be looking at upwards of $143 million in losses.

However, it is the healthcare sector that Parametrix expects to experience the biggest direct financial hit, with companies suffering a loss of nearly $2 billion. This is followed by the banking industry with $1.149 billion in losses. The uneven manner in which the incident affects business sectors means that the companies in these sectors will account for nearly 60% of the loss despite only making up one fifth of Fortune 500 revenues.

Parametrix’s estimates are drawn from more than 54 billion points of data based on the historical performance of cloud services and directly monitoring thousands of technology businesses’ real-time service status.

On top of that, the CEO of Parametrix, Jonathan Hatzor, told the New York Post that he thinks Microsoft’s financial losses could total hundreds of millions of dollars.

Meanwhile, Fitch Ratings reported that it expects several other types of insurance beyond cyber insurance to be affected by the incident, such as business interruption insurance, technology errors and omissions policies, event cancellation and travel insurance.

CrowdStrike issues apology and fix, loses stock value

Meanwhile, the firm behind the outage, Texas-based CrowdStrike, has lost around 22 percent of its stock value since the incident. It was worth around $83 billion prior to the outage and services more than half of Fortune 1000 companies, in addition to operating throughout the world.

The company released a report this week explaining what went wrong and apologized for the drama. They are blaming it on an update pushed by CrowdStrike to its Falcon platform, a cloud-based service that is supposed to protect businesses from disruptions and cyber attacks. A bug in the update led to the simultaneous crash of 8.5 million Windows machines.

To avoid similar problems in the future, CrowdStrike has said that it will implement better testing procedures before issuing updates and use gradual rollouts to reduce the potential for simultaneous failures like those seen last week.

Although the company has already released information to help users fix impacted systems, experts maintain that getting all of the affected computers back online could take quite some time due to the need to manually weed out problematic code.

The widespread disruptions caused by the incident are a sobering reminder that many of the world’s top businesses and organizations are simply not prepared with proper contingency plans to handle the failure of crucial IT systems. This means that cyber criminals and other malicious actors are well positioned to cause chaos around the world.

France in Disarray as Arson Attacks on High-Speed Rail Routes Bring Nation to Standstill

The acts of sabotage to France’s key rail infrastructure occurred just hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games, affecting up to 1 million people.

France’s high-speed rail network was on its knees on Friday morning after being hit by a series of fires in what Prime Minister Gabriel Attal described as “acts of sabotage” on the day of the Paris Olympic Games opening ceremony.

Approximately 1 million commuters were affected by indefinite delays on what is a key date in the diary for many French city dwellers to mark the beginning of their month-long summer break as many professionals embark on the grand depart and head for the mountains and the countryside.

Rail operator SNCF confirmed many routes had been hit by a “massive attack” aimed at “paralyzing” its network with traffic on the Atlantic, North, and East lines all “very disrupted.”

It confirmed that teams were on-site carrying out diagnostics and commencing repairs to the track but that it would not be a quick fix and commuters could expect significant disruptions to last “at least through the weekend.”

Several videos posted on social media show railway stations packed with commuters with nowhere to go, sparking chaos throughout the country.

“The consequences on the rail network are massive and serious,” wrote Prime Minister Attal on X. “I express my sincere gratitude to our firefighters who intervened on the affected sites and to the SNCF agents who will carry out the necessary work to restore the network.

“Our intelligence services and law enforcement are mobilized to find and punish the perpetrators of these criminal acts,” he added.

SNCF confirmed that routes had been hit in at least five locations across multiple lines and its diagnostics teams had found “incendiary devices” along several routes of the rail network including in Eure-et-Loir, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Pas-de-Calais, and Yonne.

“The modus operandi, arson on installations, resembles that used by the ultra-left in the past,” one security source told Le Parisien newspaper.

No details about those suspected of being behind the attack have yet been disclosed.
