In Canada, it is incredibly difficult to get help for mental illness – and if Trudeau gets his way in approving this struggling group for euthanasia, for many, assisted suicide will become the default option.

(LifeSiteNews) — Looking back at my commentary on euthanasia in Canada just after the Supreme Court’s Carter decision mandated the passage of legislation legalizing euthanasia, I realize now that I was naively optimistic. 

At the time, I noted that Canada’s trajectory would become that of Belgium and the Netherlands. In fact, Canada’s journey down the slippery slope was far swifter. It took the Low Countries two decades for their euthanasia regimes to reach this point; it took Canada scarcely five years. 

Still, there are a few cautionary lessons Canada can learn from what is unfolding in the Netherlands – especially as the Trudeau government refuses to cancel their plans to expand eligibility for state-sanctioned suicide to those suffering exclusively from mental illness, with sustained public pushback prompting only a pause on the planned policy. Consider a story recently related at Spiked by Dr. Kevin Hull: 

Jolanda Fun is scheduled to die next week on her 34th birthday. As such, she has been able to prepare the funeral invites in advance. ‘Born from love, let go in love,’ reads the card. ‘After a hard-fought life, she chose the peace she so longed for.’

Fun, who lives in North Brabant in the Netherlands, explained why she wants to die in an interview with The Sunday Times last week. Though she is physically healthy, she feels constantly ‘sad, down, gloomy.’ At age 22, she was diagnosed with a litany of mental-health problems and has since run the gamut of therapies. Consequently, she has never been able to hold down a job. When a counsellor told her two years ago that she could be euthanized, she decided this was the only option left for her. ‘I want to step out of life,’ she explains.

Fun has no doubt had a difficult life. She suffers from an eating disorder, recurrent depression, autism and mild learning difficulties. But to suggest suicide as a cure to these problems is as good as giving up on her.

We all know somebody who suffers and struggles like Jolanda. We all know somebody – probably many people very close to us – who will become eligible for a lethal injection should Justin Trudeau remain prime minister long enough to implement his government’s planned expansion of Canada’s euthanasia regime. Stopping euthanasia for mental illness is an issue of such paramount importance that, whenever the next federal election is called, I will be voting almost exclusively to stop it. If Canada brings in suicide-on-demand for the suicidal, we will have a bloodbath – and that is not even remotely hyperbolic. Euthanasia deaths are already over 4 percent of all recorded deaths each year. 

If you need to put another face to this policy, consider 28-year-old Zoraya ter Beek of Twente, the Netherlands. According to a profile in The Sun on April 5, the physically healthy young woman – who suffers from depression and autism – has decided to die by euthanasia. Despite having a boyfriend she loves very much, as well as several beloved pets, she made the decision after she claimed that a psychiatrist told her “it’s never gonna get any better.” She has chosen to be euthanized at home, with her boyfriend by her side. “I don’t see it as my soul leaving, but more as myself being freed from life,” she said. “I’m a little afraid of dying, because it’s the ultimate unknown. We don’t really know what’s next – or is there nothing? That’s the scary part.”  

As an important aside: Almost nobody comments on the fact that legal euthanasia is based on the foundational assumption that Christianity is not true.  

We all know somebody like Zoraya, who struggled with depression and at times feels like giving up. In Canada, it is incredibly difficult to get help for mental illness – and for many, assisted suicide will become the default option. Euthanasia will become the only thing they are actually eligible for. Suicide would become the only “service” the government is actually capable of providing access to. In theory, you can get an appointment with a psychiatrist; in practice, only the “MAiD provider” is available to see you. We are already seeing this with all kinds of other healthcare services, from palliative beds to hospital beds to cancer care – fundamental failures of the system result in desperate, suffering people opting for a lethal injection instead.

Summer reliability assessment predicts power outages could hit two thirds of Americans this summer.

The mainstream media is finally admitting that the shift to green energy is threatening Americans’ power supplies, with the Washington Post warning that our power grid is being pushed “to the brink.”

Could rolling blackouts soon became the norm in parts of the U.S., much like they are in places like North Korea and Pakistan?

Demand is skyrocketing in places like Northern Virginia, where the equivalent to several big nuclear plants is needed to handle all of the upcoming data centers there, and Georgia, whose projected new electricity use for the next decade is 17 times greater than recent figures. In Texas, where there are already routine electricity shortages on the hottest days of summer, growing demand could push it to a breaking point, while Arizona’s biggest utility expects to be out of transmission capacity before the decade closes.

The paper notes: “Vast swaths of the United States are at risk of running short of power as electricity-hungry data centers and clean-technology factories proliferate around the country, leaving utilities and regulators grasping for credible plans to expand the nation’s creaking power grid.”

They cite the rapid scaling of cloud computing and AI as part of the problem given its great demand for power. Crypto mining is also placing pressure on the grid, causing bottlenecks and other issues.

However, they also point out that manufacturers of clean technologies such as electric vehicle batteries and solar panels are building a lot of factories in the U.S. with support from federal incentives, and utility projections for the power that new factories will need in the next five years have nearly doubled and could grow even further.

They add that the energy transition is pushing many Americans to depend on the power grid for fueling their cars, induction stoves, heat pumps and other appliances that used to run on fossil fuels.

The chairman of electricity regulator Georgia Public Service Commission, Jason Shaw, said: “When you look at the numbers, it is staggering. It makes you scratch your head and wonder how we ended up in this situation. How were the projections that far off? This has created a challenge like we have never seen before.”

Although the Post does express concerns about how this might “stifle the transition to cleaner energy,” at least they are admitting there is a problem here.

Summer reliability assessment predicts power outages could hit two thirds of Americans this summer

Assessments by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) predict that two thirds of the U.S. could experience power outages this summer, including nearly everyone living to the west of the Mississippi River. They note that the government is forcing conventional energy resources like nuclear power, natural gas and coal into retirement too quickly, and it is not being replaced quickly enough by wind and solar power to meet power demands.

The Institute for Energy Research notes that the EPA’s Good Neighbor Plan, which requires the fossil fuel plants in nearly half of the country to decrease nitrogen oxide emissions, will also lead to blackouts as power plants are expected to comply by limiting their hours of operation.

Meanwhile, solar plant inverters are suffering from widespread glitches and systemic performance issues that can trigger major power outages and threaten grid reliability.

They said: “The NERC summer reliability assessment is a warning to the Biden Administration and states moving full speed ahead on the green energy transition.”

Unfortunately, they believe that it won’t be until the power goes out and people experience blackouts that politicians will realize just how disastrous their push for green energy really is.

Two men attempted to kill multiple people in Jerusalem this morning using a car and automatic weapons

Two attackers ran down pedestrians in a car early this Monday morning in Jerusalem and then tried to shoot people with automatic weapons. The weapons apparently jammed and both men have now been detained.

In security camera footage posted to Twitter, the attackers, driving a white car, can be seen mowing down a group of pedestrians in Jerusalem, before crashing into a parked car.

The two men then bail from the vehicle and run from the scene brandishing weapons. At one point they can be seen stopping, apparently to clear a jam, before exiting the frame.

Another video from the scene shows the scene of the crash after the suspects were apprehended. The attack vehicle can be seen with its doors open and bonnet crumpled. A cordon and large police presence is visible.

A third video shows the two men being removed by security forces from a local furniture store.

The severity of the injuries suffered by the pedestrians who were hit, or if anybody was shot, is unclear at this time.

The flames from the arson attack could be seen 10 kilometers away.

German state security services are investigating an arson attack against an Alternative for Germany (AfD) politician’s moving business in the Saale district of Schkopau, with five out of his six trucks set completely ablaze while the remaining one was badly damaged.

The Hohenweiden moving company, owned by local AfD politician Sven Ebert, has been targeted in the past, including suspected Antifa groups that hit his company with paint attacks. 

The arson attack produced a blaze so intense that the flames could be seen up to 10 kilometers away in Halle an der Saale. The resulting damage is estimated to cost several hundred thousand euros. The police are investigating a potential political motive.

Ebert has eight branches of his moving company in total in central Germany, but the targeted fleet represented nearly the company’s entire fleet at that location. The company plans to continue operations with rental vehicles.

Ebert is a member of the local AfD council in Schkopau and sits on the district council of Saalekreis.

The arson attack against an AfD politician is far from the first, with AfD politicians having their own personal vehicles targeted with arson, including directly outside their homes, on a number of occasions. AfD politicians and political supporters are also targeted more with violence than any other party in Germany, according to official interior ministry documents. 

Ebert is currently the subject of a court case for allegedly attacking two young women in the spring of 2021 after the girls sprayed AfD election posters with paint. Ebert reportedly knocked a phone out of one of the girl’s hands and kicked them away from the area. A Halle district court sentenced him to six months in prison for dangerous bodily harm, but Ebert is appealing the sentence to the Naumburg Higher Regional Court.

Locals report Israeli quadcopters drawing people out of their houses by playing sounds of women and children in distress.

Israeli quadcopters are employing a “bizarre” new tactic of playing audio recordings of crying infants and women in order to lure Palestiniansto locations where they can be targeted.

On Sunday and Monday night, residents of the northern parts of Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp woke up to the sounds of babies crying and women calling out for help.

When they went outside to locate the source of the cries and provide aid, Israeli quadcopters reportedly opened fire directly at them.

Samira Abu al-Leil, a resident of the refugee camp, told Middle East Eye that she heard Israeli quadcopters opening fire during and shortly after playing the recorded sounds, which lasted for several minutes and recurred multiple times on Monday night. 

“I heard a woman crying and screaming for help, saying, ‘Help me, my son was martyred’. The sounds were coming from the street and they were bizarre,” the 49-year-old said.

“Some men rushed out to the rescue, only to be shot by the quadcopters that kept roaming all night long.”

According to eyewitnesses, at least seven to 10 people were injured by the quadcopter fire overnight.

Residents were unable to help the victims, as the “quadcopters were firing at anything that moved”. However, an ambulance managed to reach the area and transport them to hospital.

“At night, the streets are usually empty and men are inside their homes,” Leil added. “When the quadcopters open fire, they only hit the roofs and streets, they don’t find any people to shoot. So they played these sounds because they know the nature of our society; they know that men were going to try to provide help. They wanted them to go out so that they could shoot them,” she said. 

“Yesterday and the night before, quadcopter bullets hit our roof, door and the street in front of our home. But yesterday morning, they fired some kind of explosive bombs with shrapnel that spreads everywhere on our neighbourhood, leaving many residents injured.”

Quadcopter attacks increasing

Quadcopters are remote-controlled drones that have been used extensively against Palestinian fighters and civilians in the Gaza Strip since 7 October. 

This technology is gradually replacing ground troops, aiding in target identification, individual targeting, and securing areas where Israeli soldiers are stationed.

Additionally, quadcopters can scout forward positions, target individuals within residences, and disperse crowds in public spaces.

A significant event involving the use of quadcopters occurred on 11 January when a large crowd waiting for food on al-Rasheed Street, near the Gaza City coastline, came under fire from the Israeli military. Numerous witnesses recounted quadcopters firing upon hundreds of individuals awaiting the arrival of aid trucks.

Muhammed Abu Youssef, 19, told MEE that at around 2am on Monday he heard the cries of babies. However, since people were posting on social media to raise awareness of the source of these sounds, he chose not to venture outside.

“There were different sounds coming from the quadcopters. They were making noises; some recordings were comprehensible and some were not. They lasted for around 30 to 60 minutes, then the quadcopters started opening fire and firing bombs in the neighbourhood,” he said.

“We did not go out, because we learned that these were only recordings played by the quadcopters to lure us to go out.”

A video recorded by a resident of Nuseirat refugee camp, and circulating on social media, showcased sounds of crying infants, while the resident explained that these were pre-recorded sounds played by Israeli quadcopters.

“Over the past three days, there have been at least 12 injuries due to quadcopter fire. This morning alone, we rescued six people who were wounded in the neighbourhood. The injuries were serious: some were shot directly in the head.”

According to the residents, the audio recordings also included songs in both Hebrew and Arabic, including children’s songs, sounds of clashes and moving tanks, voices of Palestinian armed men, and voices of local roaming vendors of cleaning products familiar to residents of Gaza.

For over a week, the Israeli army has been carrying out an intense military attack on the northwestern part of Nuseirat, targeting individuals, homes and neighbourhoods with artillery, aerial and naval shelling, as well as quadcopter gunfire.

At least five rockets were fired at a US base in Syria

Five or more rockets were fired from the Iraqi town of Zummar at a US military base in northeastern Syria, according to security sources.

A US official who spoke to Reuters said that the missiles did not injure any personnel at Rumalyn military base in Syria.

Telegram groups affiliated with Kataib Hezbollah both claimed and dispute that the attack was a response to the failure of talks to end the US-led military coalition operating in Iraq.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq appeared to claim responsibility for the attack, stating on Telegram that “what happened a short while ago is the beginning that must be escalated.” The group had given the Iraqi government three months to negotiate the departure of the two or so thousand US forces in the country.

Iranian-backed groups have intensified attacks on US bases in the region after the October 7 attacks in Israel. Yesterday’s attack is the first since February and comes a day after Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani returned to the country after visiting Joe Biden at the White House.
