Ukrainian Drones Hit Russia’s Third-Largest Oil Refinery, Prompting White House Anger

Ukraine keeps striking Russian oil assets despite the Biden admin’s unequivocal demands for a hard stop, suggesting that diplomatic fallout is now imminent.

As discussed in our morning wrap, US equity futures are dipping lower as bond yields in the US continue to move higher as crude continues to surge and is up another 2% on growing fears of middle-eastern escalation after a senior Iranian commander was killed by an Israeli airstrike in Syria yesterday, with Iran immediately vowing revenge, and as Ukraine once again struck oil infrastructure targets deep inside Russia, overnight hitting Russia’s 3rd largest refinery, ~800 miles from the front lines.

As OilPrice details, Ukrainian drones hit the primary refining unit of Russia’s third-largest refinery southeast of Moscow more than 800 miles from the front line, Reuters reported on Tuesday. Ukraine keeps striking Russian oil assets despite the Biden admin’s unequivocal demands for a hard stop, suggesting that diplomatic fallout is now imminent.

The Taneco refinery of Russian company Tatneft in Tatarstan, an industrialized region southeast of Moscow, was attacked by Ukrainian drones in the latest such attack from Ukraine on Russian refining infrastructure.

The refinery has a capacity to process 340,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude. Its primary refining unit, with a capacity to process about 155,000 bpd, was hit in Tuesday’s attack, according to pictures seen by Reuters. The unit caught fire, which was swiftly extinguished, Russian media report.

They also quote Ramil Mullin, the mayor of the city of Nizhnekamsk, where the refinery is located, as saying that there have been no injured people in the attack.

“There are no injuries or serious damage,” Mullin wrote on Telegram. “The technological process of the enterprise has not been disrupted,” the mayor added.

A source with the Ukrainian intelligence in Kyiv told Reuters that Ukraine hit a major Russian oil facility in Tatarstan to reduce Russian oil revenues.

Ukraine has stepped up attacks on oil refineries in Russia in recent weeks, which have reduced Russian refining capacity, and which, reportedly, have the White House concerned about rising international prices.

The United States has repeatedly urged Ukraine to halt its drone attacks on Russian oil refineries due to Washington’s assessment that the strikes could lead to Russian retaliation and push up global oil prices, the Financial Times reported last month, citing sources familiar with the exchange.

According to Reuters estimatesthe amount of Russian oil refining capacity that has been taken offline due to Ukrainian drone strikes is 14% of Russia’s total refining capacity.

Calculations show that 900,000 bpd of refining capacity have been taken offline by drone strikes, Reuters reported last week.

Olympic Officials Asked Ukraine to Spy on Russian Athletes – IOC Chief

“We have a special supervisory commission together with an independent company which is monitoring the internet, the media, and public declarations,” IOC president said

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has admitted to a pair of pranksters that Ukrainians have been asked to spy on Russian athletes online so that they could be banned from the upcoming Paris Games.

In a video-call posted on Tuesday, in which one of the Russian duo known as Vovan and Lexus impersonated an African official, Bach claimed that by sanctioning Russian athletes, the IOC is “punishing those who are responsible for the annexation.”

The IOC chief was apparently referring to the former Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye, which overwhelmingly voted to join Russia in a public referendum in 2022. They followed the Crimean Peninsula, which did the same in 2014 after a Western-backed coup in Kiev.

“No Russian anthem can be played and no Russian flag can be raised [at the Paris 2024 Olympics],” the IOC president stated.

Answering a question on whether Russian athletes who support the Ukraine conflict deserved the right to take part in the Olympics, Bach revealed that the IOC has a special commission which monitors public statements by athletes in support of the government in Moscow.

“We have a special supervisory commission together with an independent company which is monitoring the internet, the media, and public declarations,” he stated.

“We also offered the Ukrainian side – and not only offered, but also asked to provide us with their knowledge about the behavior of such athletes or officials,” Bach further revealed.

He stressed that any athletes found to have expressed support for the Russian government will be banned from the Olympics.

Russian athletes are allowed to participate in the Games as neutrals in individual sports, but are barred from team events.

After the start of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, the IOC recommended that athletes from Russia and its close ally Belarus should not be allowed to compete in international events. In December last year, the body ruled that a limited number of people from the two countries could participate in the Olympics as AINs (individual neutral athletes).

In March, the international body announced that the maximum number of Russians who could qualify for the Paris Games was 55, while Belarus is limited to 28 athletes. However, according to IOC director James Macleod, the two nations are unlikely to meet the quotas, and around 36 Russian and 22 Belarusian athletes are expected to make it to the Games.

Several top-ranking European officials, including Latvian Foreign Minister Krisjanis Karins and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, have fallen for prank calls by Russian duo Vovan and Lexus in recent months, during which the politicians revealed their thoughts on sensitive topics such as the Ukraine conflict.

Oil Prices Hit Highest Level Since 2022

Brent futures approached $90 per barrel on Tuesday

The price of the oil benchmark Brent peaked at $89 per barrel on Tuesday, nearing levels last seen in June 2022, according to Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) data. Industry experts have attributed the surge to an Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus and Tehran’s threat of retaliation.

Brent futures had risen by nearly 2% since Monday to trade at $89.060 per barrel as of 10:25 GMT, before retreating slightly, according to the ICE figures. The US benchmark West Texas Intermediate exceeded $85.

On Monday, Iran – a major oil producer – threatened a “harsh” response against Israel. The attack on the Iranian diplomatic compound in Damascus killed seven Iranian military advisers including three senior commanders.

Israel has repeatedly targeted Iranian installations in Syria, due to Tehran’s alleged support of the Palestinian group Hamas in Gaza. Although Israel has not commented on the latest strike, the New York Times cited four unnamed Israeli officials as acknowledging that Israel was behind it.

Oil prices have rallied in recent months on fears that the Israel-Palestine conflict could spread to the broader Middle East. The region is a crucial supplier of energy and a key oil shipping route.  In mid-March the price of Brent climbed to $85 per barrel as Yemen’s Houthi militants stepped up their rocket fire on merchant ships in the Red Sea, calling it retaliation for the actions of Israel and its supporters.

According to a projection by Bloomberg Economics, oil prices could reach $150 per barrel if Iran joins the conflict.

ICE data suggests that Brent last traded above the current level in June 2022 ($98.460 per barrel on June 28, 2022), during the early stages of the Western sanctions campaign against Russia, a major oil exporter, over the Ukraine conflict.

The advance in crude prices has also been underpinned by OPEC+ production cuts, strong economic data from China, and economists’ expectations of a global deficit this year.

Being Pro-Life a Potential Stepping Stone to Terrorism, Says UK Government

Being Pro-Life a Potential Stepping Stone to Terrorism, Says UK Government

American government sees pro-lifers as dangerous, too.

Taking a stand for unborn human lives is a clear indicator that one is on the path towards becoming a terrorist, according to the government of the United Kingdom.

A UK counterterrorism program called “Prevent,” which aims to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism through education, includes mentions of “single-issue ideologies” that the government says could radicalize people into becoming terrorists, one of those issues being abortion.

Right to Life UK is warning the public that the UK government sees certain “extreme right-wing ideologies” as dangerous, one of them being pro-life advocates who oppose murdering babies in the womb through abortion.

“Narratives are likely to come from those who seek?to change a specific policy or practice, as opposed to replacing the whole economic, political or social system,” the Prevent training program states.

“Examples include, animal rights, anti-abortion or anti-fascism. Single-issue narratives can be politically agnostic, meaning they may be?neither right nor left aligned.”

In a statement of response to the Prevent program’s disturbing language against pro-lifers, Right to Life UK spokesperson Catherine Robinson said the UK government is making it undeniably clear that it opposes people who support life.

“The government are explicit that they believe that being pro-life is a potential ideology leading to terrorism,” Robinson said. “There has not been a single instance of anti-abortion terrorism in British history.”

“It is a grave insult and sign of deep intolerance that the government, via Prevent training, implies that being pro-life is potentially the beginning of the road towards terrorism.”

American government sees pro-lifers as dangerous, too

America’s federal government is not much different than the UK government – they are close allies after all. The Department of Justice (DOJ) infamous labeled pro-lifers as dangerous terrorists as well, paving the way for the eventual criminalization of pro-life thoughts and actions.

Remember when the FBI terrorized and arrested pro-life activist Mark Houck, a Catholic father of seven, for his views? FBI agents in full tactical gear showed up armed in September 2022 at Houck’s home and dragged him away in front of his wife and children for supposedly violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, a bill that punishes pro-lifers for trying to deter pregnant mothers before they murder their unborn children.

“[It was] an act of terror designed to humiliate, intimidate and instill fear in us,” Houck told Live Action president and founder Lila Rose about the experience.

“And they’ve effectively done that with our children to this day, but [to] instill fear in pro-life America, right? Because this is now becoming an overreach of government.”

In the end, Houck was acquitted of all charges, but he is just one of many pro-lifers who are being targeted right here in the United States for taking a stand for the lives of the unborn.

The DOJ continues to target pro-life groups for their “extremely dangerous behavior,” which includes non-violent actions such as sitting in front of or within close vicinity of an abortion facility.

Under the FACE Act, the DOJ has brought 20 criminal prosecutions and one civil case against a total of 46 defendants, reports indicate. All but one of the cases involved charges for disrupting abortion clinics in some way.

Right now, several pro-lifers across America face a potential of 11 years in prison for obstructing the entrance to an abortion clinic. Pro-abortionists who deface crisis pregnancy centers, meanwhile, are free to continue committing their crimes without punishment.

The pro-death lobby considers it terrorism to protect the unborn. Find out more at Abortions.news.
