“Censorship Is a Certainty If Dems Win”: Musk Speaks Out as Twitter Banned in Brazil

Elon Musk warned Harris and Walz will infringe the First Amendment

Elon Musk warned Americans that “censorship is a certainty if Dems win,” as the billionaire Twitter owner deals with the fallout of the judicial decision to ban Twitter/X in Brazil.

Musk was responding to a popular Twitter user, DogeDesigner, who said “I wouldn’t be surprised to see X suspended in the US if the Democrats come into power again.”

On Friday, Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexander de Moraes suspended Twitter in the country and set a hefty daily fine of nearly $9,000 for anybody who uses a VPN to access the site. Twitter will remain suspended until the company complies with the Judge’s orders.

In his decision, Judge Moraes said that “Elon Musk showed his total disrespect for Brazilian sovereignty and, in particular, for the judiciary, setting himself up as a true supranational entity and immune to the laws of each country.”

On Thursday night, in anticipation of the ban, Twitter/X’s Global Affairs account issued a statement in English and Portuguese.

“Soon, we expect Judge Alexandre de Moraes will order X to be shut down in Brazil – simply because we would not comply with his illegal orders to censor his political opponents. These enemies include a duly elected Senator and a 16-year-old girl, among others.

“When we attempted to defend ourselves in court, Judge de Moraes threatened our Brazilian legal representative with imprisonment. Even after she resigned, he froze all of her bank accounts. Our challenges against his manifestly illegal actions were either dismissed or ignored. Judge de Moraes’ colleagues on the Supreme Court are either unwilling or unable to stand up to him.

“We are absolutely not insisting that other countries have the same free speech laws as the United States. The fundamental issue at stake here is that Judge de Moraes demands we break Brazil’s own laws. We simply won’t do that.”

The account then promised that in the coming days the Judge’s “illegal demands and all related court filings” will be published “in the interest of transparency.”

“Unlike other social media and technology platforms, we will not comply in secret with illegal orders.

“To our users in Brazil and around the world, X remains committed to protecting your freedom of speech.”

Elon Musk has since described Judge Moraes as “an evil dictator cosplaying as a judge.”

Musk has repeatedly warned that Harris and Walz will look to censor free speech and violate the First Amendment, and he has also linked censorship in the US to attempts across the Western world to limit freedom of speech and individual rights.

The Sifter With John Ferreira

The Sifter With John Ferreira

This is a bit niche and a departure from my usual content. In this discussion with John Ferreira I discuss my approach to research and some of the problems involved. If that sound interesting to you then please watch the video.

John Ferreira has a very interesting decentralised project under development. John’s SifterNews mission is to help investigative journalist and researchers more broadly with their daily workflow and hopefully give them new access to income streams from their raw research.

Sifter, is an open-source intelligence tool (OSINT) that empowers any investigator to collect, analyse and report their findings visually.

John recognises that investigative research is hard and time-consuming, which makes it costly. The Sifter project aims to radically reduced the time of investigations, by uncovering hidden patterns sooner. Whilst also providing a new crowdsourced income stream for investigative researchers.

The SifterNews project is intended to provide investigative researchers a simple way to collect and search through sources, and then we have an amazing user experience for analysing their findings.

John’s objective is to build a SAAS [Software as a service] product that combines private and publicly sourced data sets, with user-generated notes. which is complemented with a browser extension to directly reference inline statements. All data points will be visually collated in a user-friendly node-based graph, from which reports can be crafted, and subscribed to by internal or external audiences.

The envisaged typical users are investigators, initially investigative journalists, then broadening out to researchers, and business analysts. The business model is based upon user subscriptions but, as I understand it, the plan is to monetise investigative research enabling independent researchers to share their research with others, either on a fee paid basis or freely.

Again, as I understand it, John hopes to enable groups of investigative researchers to form their own collectives whose research can be shared only among themselves but who can then provide the product of their investigative research to others, who may be willing to pay for access.

John Kindly wrote a handy summary of the discussion:

Iain Davis, a blogger and researcher, discusses his journey into research and journalism investigation, as well as his approach to critical thinking. He emphasizes the importance of questioning information from all sources and using the Trivium method to analyze and understand events. Davis also shares his process of collecting and organizing information, including unlocking paywalled studies and searching for primary sources. He highlights the challenges of accessing and analysing government reports and documents. Overall, his work focuses on uncovering the truth and promoting independent thinking. The conversation explores the importance of maintaining access to information and the censorship agenda that aims to control our access to information. It discusses the need for collaboration and collective research to counter censorship and archive valuable information. The conversation also delves into the concept of critical thinking and the ability to analyse information from different perspectives. It emphasizes the common ground between people with different political ideologies and the importance of working together to uncover the truth. The conversation concludes with a discussion on how to follow and support the speaker’s work.

Another Lie! Walz Made Up Key Parts of His Political “Origin Story”

Tim Walz simply “made up” his political origin story, the Washington Examiner has revealed

Tim Walz fabricated key details of his political “origin story,” an encounter that supposedly saw him barred from a George W. Bush campaign rally, according to The Washington Examiner.

Walz claimed that he was inspired to run for public office when he attempted to gain entry to a George W. Bush rally in 2004, only to be turned away when event staffers noticed a John Kerry sticker on the wallet of one of the two students who were with him.

The Atlantic described the supposed encounter between Walz and his students on the one hand and the event staffers as a “KGB-style interrogation.”

The Washinton Examiner spoke to sources and used public records to show that large parts of the Walz story simply don’t add up.

For starters, Walz was actually admitted to the rally. He went inside, but the teenagers who were with him did not.

The two teenagers who were with him were not his students.

“And while Walz framed the squabble as the ‘moment that I decided to run for office’ since he had ‘never been overly involved in political campaigns,’ evidence suggests that Walz was already politically active by that point: He participated days earlier in an anti-Bush protest before the 2004 Bush rally in Mankota, Minnesota, on Aug. 4, an image confirms.”

A Bush staffer who worked the rally told the Examiner that Walz was “looking for an origin story” so he simply “made one up.”

The Harris-Walz campaign did not return a request for comment from the Examiner.

Walz has come under significant pressure since his selection as Kamala Harris’s running-mate to explain a series of apparent lies and misrepresentations. Walz has been accused of “stolen valor” for inflating his service rank with the Minnesota National Guard, for suggesting he wielded “weapons of war” in an active conflict when he didn’t, and for leaving his National Guard unit on the eve of its deployment to Iraq. He has also lied or misrepresented the circumstances of his wife’s fertility treatment and a DUI offence in the 1990s.

The Minnesota governor is also being investigated by the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability for his close links to China. Walz has travelled to China around 30 times since 1989 and represented China’s interests vigorously in the United States. A former student who travelled to China with Walz described him as “Maoist to the core.”
