Come January of 2025, there may be a new government in Washington D.C. that could work together with President Jose Raul Mulino

The Darien Gap, a jungle in Panama, is a major link along the invasion route that leads from South America into Central America, and eventually to the U.S.

It’s estimated that half a million migrants, including 113,000 children, passed through it in 2023. These people came from South America, the Caribbean, and even Africa and Asia.

The Darien Gap is a dangerous place, filled with rivers, cliffs, animals, and criminal gangs.

Closing down the Gap could significantly reduce the amount of people coming to the U.S.

Believe it or not, the newly-elected president of Panama pledged to do exactly that during his campaign.

Usually, Latin American leaders tacitly encourage mass migration as it gets people out of their country. President Jose Raul Mulino may be different.

On May the 5, Cinco de Mayo in Spanish, Panama held its presidential election.

It was a real doozy, with six candidates contending. Mulino was the standard-bearer of the right-wing Realizando Metas (Accomplishing Goals)party.

Mulino wasn’t even the party’s candidate until February, when the previous candidate, former president Ricardo Martinelli, had to drop out due to a money laundering conviction.

Mulino went on to win the election on Cinco de Mayo and is scheduled to take office on July 1.

One of Mulino’s campaign pledges was to close the Darien Gap.

“The border of the United States, instead of being in Texas, moved to Panama,” Mulino said.

Good observation.

Mulino’s pledge?

“We’re going to close the Darien and we’re going to repatriate all these people.”

Sounds great.

“I am committed to ending this migratory crisis on our soil with a respect for human rights and robust international cooperation.”

Mulino also suggested the construction of a wall to restrain the masses of migrants constantly crossing through Panama.

The candidate gave a positive shout-out to Donald Trump, asking him to “add some cement” to the wall.

Could Mulino really close the Darien Gap?

Of course, there are naysayers.

Juan Pappier of Human Rights Watch said, “Closing the Darien Gap is virtually impossible.”

But if you listen to more of what Pappier says, you get the impression that what he really means is that it shouldn’t be done.

“Restricting the flow would push people to take even more dangerous paths. People will risk their lives, organized crime groups will get richer, and Panama will have even less control.”

Wait a minute there. Crossing the Gap is already dangerous, people already risk their lives, criminal gangs are already involved, and Panama has already lost control.

Sounds like the critics of a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border: First they say it can’t be done, then they say it shouldn’t be done. Which is it?

As for Mulino in Panama, will he really do it? We have to wait and see on that.

But if anybody could do it, it just might be Mulino. He actually has some experience in these matters, having served as Panama’s Minister of Public Security from 2010 to 2014.

In that capacity, Mulino set up police checkpoints, preventing 15,000 criminals from fleeing Panama.

Mulino dealt with the seizure by Panama of the Chong Chon Gang, a North Korean cargo vessel being used to smuggle weaponry from Cuba to North Korea. The armaments were hidden in a cargo of brown sugar. (You can’t make this stuff up!)

The most relevant accomplishment on Mulino’s resume is an operation he oversaw in the Darien Gap itself. Mulino recovered a section of the Gap on the border of Colombia, wresting it back from narco-guerrillas who had taken control.

That bears some resemblance to what is going on now.

So let’s see what Presidente Mulino does after taking office July 1.

As a realist, I understand that a lot could go wrong. We know that politicians do not, and cannot, always keep their campaign pledges.

But hey, let’s give Mulino a chance and see what he can do.

It would be great, wouldn’t it?

And come January of 2025, there may be a new government in Washington D.C. that could work together with Jose Raul Mulino.

That would be good for both countries.

This isn’t the first time the Marines have tested robots equipped with weapons

US Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC) is evaluating new robot dogs for use in combat. The robot dogs, developed by Ghost Robotics, can be equipped with weapons systems.

MARSOC is currently testing the quadrupedal unmanned ground vehicles (Q-UGVs) for a number of different uses, including reconnaissance and surveillance, but it has also been investigating the robots’ potential as weapons platforms.

Two Q-UGVs with weapons systems are currently being tested. They are equipped with Onyx Industries’ SENTRY remote weapon system, which uses an AI imaging system to allow autonomous tracking and detection of enemies, whether human or non-human.

At present, the system requires human intervention to fire, but critics worry that decision-making for engagement will be handed off to the robots themselves in the near future.

Many believe this is a matter of “when” and not “if.” In November 2022, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a decision that allows the San Francisco Police Department to use lethal robots against suspects.

This is not the first time the Marines have tested robots with weapons.

The Marines have already tested robot dogs equipped with rocket launchers.

AI is now capable of deceiving its human handlers, even when it is explicitly programmed not to

AI systems are already skilled at manipulating their human controllers in a variety of different situations, according to a worrying new review study.

In a review study published in the journal Patterns, researchers describe documented instances of AI systems using lies and deception, and call for governments to develop regulations to prevent the issue from getting out of hand, before it’s too late.

“AI developers do not have a confident understanding of what causes undesirable AI behaviors like deception,” says first author Peter S. Park, a postdoctoral fellow at MIT.

“But generally speaking, we think AI deception arises because a deception-based strategy turned out to be the best way to perform well at the given AI’s training task. Deception helps them achieve their goals.”

One of the most worrying examples described in the paper involves Meta’s CICERO AI, which was trained to play the world-conquest game Diplomacy. Although the AI was supposedly trained not to “intentionally backstab” its human allies while playing the game, that’s exactly what it did.

“We found that Meta’s AI had learned to be a master of deception,” explains Park.

“While Meta succeeded in training its AI to win in the game of Diplomacy—CICERO placed in the top 10% of human players who had played more than one game—Meta failed to train its AI to win honestly.”

AI systems have also learned to bluff effectively at Texas hold ‘em poker against professional players, to fake attacks in the game Starcraft II and to misrepresent their economic interests to gain the upper hand in economic negotiations.

Although these may seem like trivial instances of deception, the study authors warn that, with the capacities of AI developing at a furious pace, it won’t be long until AI is capable of much more potentially damaging consequences if its capabilities go unchecked.

“We as a society need as much time as we can get to prepare for the more advanced deception of future AI products and open-source models,” says Park.

“As the deceptive capabilities of AI systems become more advanced, the dangers they pose to society will become increasingly serious.”

The study authors believe, at the very least, that deceptive AI systems must be classified and treated as high risk, even if they cannot be banned.

The retailer will not be featuring Pride displays in most of its stores

Target will scale back its Pride Month offering this year, following last year’s angry backlash against products that featured satanic imagery and encouraged children to “tuck” and hide their genitalia.

In a statement issued on Friday, the retailer said that its Pride-themed merchandise would be available in “select stores and on Target.com.”

This is a significant departure from previous years, including last year, when Pride products were situated prominently in virtually all stores, often near the entrances.

Last year, Target claimed it was forced to remove or resituate Pride displays to protect its “team members’ sense of safety and well-being,” after widespread protests at the overt sexualised nature of the displays and the presence of Satanic imagery.

Target also faced angry criticism for selling so-called “tuck-friendly” clothing that allows wearers, including children, to hide their genitalia.

Some customers hid products or even destroyed displays.

“Given these volatile circumstances, we are making adjustments to our plans, including removing items that have been at the center of the most significant confrontational behavior,” the company said in a statement.

Among the products removed were those by the LGBTQ brand Abprallen, which “offers some products featuring spooky, gothic imagery, such as skulls and Satan, in pastels colors,” according to NPR.

A few weeks before the backlash over last year’s Pride offering, Target CEO Brian Cornell said in an interview that the company wanted to support “all families” and that its “focus on diversity and inclusion and equity has fueled much of our growth over the last nine years.”

A paralegal for DA Alvin Bragg admitted on the stand that a quantity of evidence had been deleted

Donald Trump Jr. took to Twitter to slam DA Alvin Bragg and his team after it emerged that evidence of phone calls between Stormy Daniels’ lawyer and Michael Cohen was deleted.

“Insanity! How on earth is this not a felony committed by Bragg and his minions?” Don Jr. asked on Friday.

“It sure would be if team Trump did it.

“I’d love if we had actual journalists that would report on this ongoing travesty.

“Sadly, proper journalism is dead. They’re just scribes for the regime.”

Don Jr. was responding to a post by Greg Price, in which he detailed how paralegal Jaden Jarmel-Schneider admitted that three pages’ worth of call details, including calls between Stormy Daniels’ lawyer Keith Davidson and Michael Cohen, were deleted

Price noted that evidence-tampering is a Class E felony in New York.

Twitter owner Elon Musk also chimed in with a typically laconic response to Price’s post.
