“Healthy” Gluten-Free Products Laced with Harmful Substances—including Gluten
Gluten-free products are laced with harmful substances including pesticides, glyphosate and even gluten, according to a new report by non-profit Moms Across America.
Forty-six samples of widely available gluten-free foods were tested for glyphosate, 236 different pesticides, gluten and various different minerals. The products included bread, pasta, carckers, snacks, flour, dessert mixes and chips.
It’s estimated that 6% of Americans, or nearly 20 million people are gluten-intolerant. Just over three million have celiac disease, a potentially life-threatening condition that requires strict avoidance of gluten. Celiac disease has been linked to glyphosate, a herbicide that is used in enormous quantities throughout the world, and especially in the US, where it is used on everything from lawns to genetically modified soy and corn.

Among the findings were that all but two of the 46 samples contained detectable levels of glyphosate. Just over 20% of the samples tested higher than 10 parts per billion of the chemical, which is the EU threshold for acceptable levels.
The highest level of glyphosate—a massive 2,963 parts per billion—is the highest level of the chemical ever recorded in food by the lab that carried out the testing. The product was Banza Chickpea Pasta.
Organic gluten-free products, which should have had the lowest levels of glyphosate, did not.
The most widespread pesticide detected in the samples was 2,4-D, one of the active ingredients in Agent Orange. King Arthur’s Gluten-Free Flour and Milton’s Sea Salt Crackers had the highest levels of pesticides, at 147 and 75 parts per billion respectively.
Equally worrying is the fact that many of the products actually contained gluten at levels higher than the FDA’s maximum for gluten-free products. Simple Mills Brownie Mix, Made Good Vanilla Cookers and Simple Mills Almond Flour Crackers all contained significantly higher levels of gluten than the 20 parts per million allowed by the FDA.
The study also showed that many of these products had extremely low levels of essential vitamins and minerals.

Zen Honeycutt, founding Director of Moms Across America, said, “The prevalence of glyphosate and agrochemicals in gluten-free food products made for people with conditions such as celiac disease is disturbing for many reasons, especially because it is avoidable.
“All our policy makers need to do is disallow the spraying of glyphosate and other agrochemicals as a drying agent, as the EU has done, and 80% of our exposure to glyphosate would be eliminated from our diet altogether. We urge food manufacturers to join us in calling for better regulation of the food supply.”
“The glyphosate contamination in these products should set off alarm bells, because those who try to improve gut health by switching to a gluten-free diet may be jumping from the frying pan into the fire,” said Stephanie Seneff, author of the book Toxic Legacy, which examines the effects of widespread exposure to glyphosate.

Biden Refuses to Believe Poll Numbers
US President Joe Biden is struggling to dispel concerns over whether he is mentally and physically capable of leading the country for another four years following his halting performance in a televised debate against Republican rival Donald Trump.
The oldest US president in history appeared so frail and confused throughout the encounter last week that a survey conducted by CBS News/YouGov shortly afterwards found that 72% of registered voters do not believe Biden has the “mental and cognitive health necessary to serve as president.”
The incumbent US president has less than a 37% approval rating among likely voters, according to a New York Times/Siena College poll released on Monday. The same survey showed Trump now leading Biden 49 percent to 43 percent, widening the gap from a 3-point lead before the debate.
“Mr. President, I’ve never seen a president with 36% approval get reelected,” ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos told Biden during their sit-down on Friday.
“Well, I don’t believe that’s my approval rating. That’s not what our polls show,” Biden replied, though it remained unclear which polling data the 81-year-old was relying on.
A Suffolk University/USA TODAY poll published Tuesday found Trump beating Biden by 3 percent, while a survey conducted for CNN by SSRS found Trump 6 points in the lead.
A separate Bloomberg News/Morning Consult tracking poll showed Biden narrowing the gap over the past week and now losing “by only 2 percentage points” in the critical swing states needed to win the November election. Overall, less than one in five respondents in those states thought the 81-year-old was the “more coherent, mentally fit or dominant participant” of the debate.’
“Look, you know polling better than anybody. Do you think polling data is as accurate as it used to be?” the US leader parried when Stephanopoulos insisted that Biden was close but still behind Trump even before going into the debate.
Biden defiantly insisted that there’s nobody “more qualified to be president or win this race than me” and said he would not drop out, even if top Democratic leaders asked him to, claiming that only “the Lord Almighty” could convince him to step aside.
Chinese Scientists Create Robot Controlled by Human Brain Cells
In a world first, Chinese scientists have created a robot that’s controlled by human brain cells.
Researchers from Tianjin University and the Southern University of Science created an organoid from human stem cells and then connected it to a neural interface, allowing it to pass instructions to a robotic body.
According to a statement, the robot is the “world’s first open-source brain-on-chip intelligent complex information interaction system.”

The researchers’ long-term aim is to create brain-computer interfaces that can be used to transmit electrical signals between the brain and computers.
Human pluripotent stem cells, which can develop into any cell type in the human body, were used to create the organoids. They then attached it to a special interface as part of a robotic body and taught the cyborg to perform simple tasks like gripping objects.
The researchers used ultrasound technology to stimulate the brain and form new networks among brain cells. The technology could be used to help patients who have suffered brain damage, for example as a result of a stroke.
It’s unclear, though, whether living-tissue organoids could be used to repair brain tissue or reconstruct damaged or dead areas of the brain. Tests on rodents suggest this is a possibility.

Orban Meets Putin in Moscow
Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban travelled to Moscow on Friday to meet President Putin, after meeting Ukrainian President Zelensky earlier in the week.
“The number of countries that can talk to both warring sides is diminishing,” Orban said.
“Hungary is slowly becoming the only country in Europe that can speak to everyone.”
Orban has made clear his desire to open diplomacy between Russia and Ukraine that could end the bloody war that has been raging for the last two years. Orban is the first Western leader to visit Moscow since Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer visited in April 2022, weeks after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
NATO and EU leaders reacted with fury to Orban’s visit to Russia, accusing him of “appeasement” in a clear nod to Neville Chamberlain’s famous visit to Munich in 1938, which failed to prevent the Second World War, despite a guarantee of “peace in our time.”
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, “Appeasement will not stop Putin. Only unity and determination will pave the path to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”
In a press conference aboard Air Force One on Friday afternoon, Karine Jean-Pierre poured scorn on Orban’s efforts to secure peace.
“We are concerned that Prime Minister Orban would choose to make this trip to Moscow, which will not advance the cause of peace and is counterproductive to promoting Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence,” the White House Press Secretary said.
“Russia could end this war today by ceasing their aggression against Ukraine, against their sovereignty, against their democracy.
“They can withdraw. They can withdraw right now.”
Orban fired back at his critics later that day, after his meeting with Putin.
“You cannot make peace from a comfortable armchair in Brussels,” the Hungarian prime minister said in a Twitter post.

The Tesla CEO questioned the degree to which US President Joe Biden is performing duties as the country’s commander-in-chief.
Tech magnate Elon Musk weighed in on the US presidential race on his X social media platform Friday amid ongoing controversy over President Joe Biden’s age and mental acuity.
“Quick update on how things are going with the election:” wrote user Chris Bakke, posting a link to New York Times opinion writer Ross Douthat’s editorial “Does America Need a President?”
“Real question … since we obviously haven’t had one for a while,” responded Musk, quoting the user.

Douthat’s column contemplates Biden’s role in the White House and the interplay of the US president’s power and influence with that of cabinet members, advisors and political allies. The opinion writer has previously insisted Biden should be replaced, arguing it would be “incredibly dangerous” for him to fill the role of chief executive for another four years.
Various US presidents have governed with differing degrees of mental incapacity historically. President Woodrow Wilson suffered a severe stroke in 1919, leaving his wife and physician to assist in running the White House for the remaining 16 months of his second term.
Observers have speculated about the degree to which former President Ronald Reagan suffered mental decline during his second term in office. The president was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease five years after leaving the White House in 1994.
“As of 1984, Reagan was sometimes incoherent, but he had – how to say it? – good days and bad days,” wrote Slate columnist Tom Scocca. “But this was “well known” already. In 1984, people agreed not to say that the president sometimes seemed senile.”
“Reagan had to be given a script by someone else before making a short phone call,” Scocca notes.
The Cold War president, who previously held the title of America’s oldest commander-in-chief, was 77 years old when he left office in 1989. Current President Joe Biden when 78 years old when taking office, meaning Biden was older when he entered the White House than the previous oldest president was when he left.
“After Gov. Josh Green of Hawaii, a physician, asked Mr. Biden questions about the status of his health, Mr. Biden replied that his health was fine,” wrote the New York Times Thursday, describing a White House meeting of the president with several Democratic Party governors.
“‘It’s just my brain,’ he added, according to three people familiar with what took place – a remark that some in the room took as a joke… But at least one governor did not, and was puzzled by it.”
